Birth controll methods

The vasectomy thread got me to thinking what's out there? What's new, what's old, what's common place and what's underground or less known?
I want to have kids some day and I am not satisfied with the reversal odds on vasectomies. Birth controll isn't working for my girlfriend, she has tried a couple pills, the patch, the shot and probably a couple others I can't think of. These all kill her sex drive so bad that birth controll in it's self. At least she tells me it's the B/C. Every time she takes a trip she stops taking it and gets randy again so we know it's either the pill, me or her life
We are thinking of trying the IUD. She has never been fond of the idea of sticking a hunk of metal up in her lady parts. It also has a higher failure rate. I was thinking combing it with a spermacide might give us pretty good odds but I cant go three minutes without going down on her and the spermacides we have tried taste worse than a dirty rim job. Does any one know of tastey edible spermicides? Probably an oxy moron but it's worth asking.
I know if you get your balls hot enough for about an hour a day you can lower your sperm count quite considerably but damn talk about putting effort into your sex life.
What else is out there?

No tasty edible spermicides that I've heard of.

She should talk with her doctor about the IUD and other options though. A lot of women react badly to certain birth control pills but don't have the same problem with others.

I have found spermicide in general even tough to find. You can't walk into your local drug store and buy it. I have even looked at online drug stores. I have heard it comes in an insert more like a dissolvable Monistat "bullett" which may be less messy then an applicator full of gel or cream. Food for thought, the Today Sponge will be back on the market supposedly by the end of the year or beginning of next.. until then it can be ordered online at Canadian Pharmacy sites.

I've never been fond of the methods that require preperation on the scene like sponges, diaphrams, condoms Male and female. It ruins the mood so bad when your gettin all into things and one of you goes "Oh yes I want you so bad, take me now" then your like alright let me just bust out this piece of equipment, figure out where it goes and how to make sure it stays there till your done.
"Okay now we're ready. Hunny wake up, ah man."

She has tried quite a few and had many conversations with gynos obout options. The IUD seems like a good next step. Honestly I do think a change is needed in our lifestyle and I bet that would change things more than a different B/C.

How about the rumor that pot seeds lower sperm count. I know  I am not thinking about this as a practical method but if the government became a little more open minded it would be cool if you could pop a baggie of shwag seeds and kill all your little buggers. :D

Aren't there other things that are detrimental to your sperm count?

My girlfrined was complaining about the sting my izim leavs in her throat and how she swore it was because it was too acidic. This led me to do some reasearch and I found cum is supposed to be very alkiline to help it survive it's journy through the Vagina which is too acidic. This made me wonder if you could us PH levels to kill sperms without giving the woman unhealthy PH levles. Maybe just squirt a lemon up there before you do the deed. :D J/K I see that causing problems.
just brain farting out loud here.
Any other ideas, thoughts or known methods?

However if you look at the consumer reports report on condoms the Planned parenthood ones performed the worst.......

what you expect them to give out the most expensive most effective condoms for free? or to give the cheep ass ones produced in Bulk which cost about a dime for 100 that are not nearly effective?

Pot never killed a single one of my husband's. We have the kids to prove it.

We have always used the rhythm method (12 years) until early this year when I got the ibbie gibbies and started using the neuva ring. I have had no problems with it and even stopped having my period for 7 months. The hubby says he can feel it in me but it does not bother him. However, due to other gyno problems I am now considering the 5 year IUD. It is plastic and releases hormones locally inside the uterus. This might be your girlfriend's problem (free hormones roaming through her system).

Outside/extra hormones reak havok with me.

Vasectomies and tubal ligations are not to be taken lightly. While there is a slight chance of failure, surgical sterilization should be considered permanent. It's NOT something you do because you eventually want to have kids but you don't want to get your GF pregnant right now. It's something that you do because you're either finished having children OR you don't want children at all. Furthermore, health insurance companies generally don't cover reversals of surgical sterilization procedures, so changing one's mind can be costly.

I know if you get your balls hot enough for about an hour a day you can lower your sperm count quite considerably but damn talk about putting effort into your sex life.
If you sincerely believe that this (or pot seeds, or whatever) is a foolproof method of BC, then you'd better be prepared for the possiblilty of fatherhood. Heat does lower sperm count, but remember that it only takes ONE sperm to fertilize an egg. Unless you're absolutely confident that hot baths will cause you to shoot blanks, and you SHOULDN'T be, you probably shouldn't rely on this as a method of BC.

Yeah, but does anyone REALLY like these methods? I've never been a big fan of condoms, either (I can't speak for other barrier methods), but if I weren't ready to be a parent, I'd think that ruining the mood a bit would be preferable to a positive pregnancy test. And unless you know that you and your partner are disease-free, pregnancy is the least of your worries, anyway.

If you don't want your girlfriend to get pregnant, but you don't want to take responsible measures to prevent pregnancy, then don't have sex. Period.

I'm not a big fan of any of the birth control methods available. They all have something about them that makes them messy, awkward, hormonally wierd, icky-tasting, and/or not 100% effective. Some of them even have side effects that are uncomfortable or dangerous - the IUD gives you a heavier period and who wants that?

It kinda pisses me off that we have 31 flavors of Viagra out there now, but birth control hasn't changed much in the last 20 years except to give us alternate forms of the female pill (patch, ring, shot).

Yoshi might be wrong about the heat and pot, but at least he's thinking 'out of the box', and, to his credit, he's thinking about what HE might do instead of leaving it to his woman to figure it out. Surely our fine pharmaceutical companies can put their money and research into that male pill or something that kills those little sperms before they come out to seek their target.

Until then, condoms will just have to do. :(

The sponge can be inserted and left in up to 24 hours (well you're supposed to leave it in 6 hours after the last time you have sex so it can do its job so 30 hours total), and the contraceptive film is supposed to be effective for 3 hours. I got a pack of sponges to test with my gf, we haven't actually tried them yet but opened oned up to take a look. I haven't tried the contraceptive film yet.

Now that the sponge is back on the market, I guess that Elaine (from Seinfeld) doesn't have to worry about choosing "spongeworthy" sexual partners. :)

Did it disappear in the US? It's been around in canada for at least 25 years.

So, wait, whats wrong with condoms?

Does one really have to ask this question? I would as readilly have intercourse with the tailpipe of my car. As far as health concernes go I have been with the same woman for five years. Condoms make a lot of sense for a one night thing with some freak you just met but I'm not that kind of guy. I also dislike the effect a condom has enough I would probably rather sit at home and play with myself over finding a situation like that.

I know, it's all the same stuff in diferent packages.
This world should really be more interested in how to make it as easy as possible to not have babies.

You do have valid points. Unfortunately a vasectomy is one of the only things a guy can do as far as long term prevention goes. I believe I have heard of male pills starting to be used in other countries though so maybe soon I can fu## up my horemone levles instead of my girlfriends.

I do not have enough faith in heating my sac or pot seeds to consider them a safe rout. I am however interested in seeing reasearch done on some alternitive methods. I know I watched a show where a group of guys heated their balls for about an hour a night. This wasn't like sitting in the hot tub though, they got them about as hot as tolerable, probably even fairly uncomfortable. I don't remember for sure if they lowered their sperm cound completley or not but it was enough they were continuing reasearch and talking about it as eventually maybe being a possible method. I would reasearch it more but like I said I just don't know if I have what it takes to do it every night.
I know the whole pot seeds thing on it's own isn't a viable alternitave it's just supposed to get people thinking. If I reasearch on the internet ways to increase my sperm count I can find a lot of thing they sugest that can effect it but I never hear mention of these things used to decrease it. I mean if only to be used in conjunction with another form to improve your odds.

The rumor I always heard (and I have no idea who would have done a real study) was that it's eating the seeds which will have a detrimental effect on your count not the act of smoking it. I think smoking it would only help by making you too lazy to do anything.

I have a girlfriend man. How do you expect me to keep my pants on. Then we would just be best friends and sit around and bitch to each other about how horny we were all day untill eventually she would probably go get it somewhere else.

However if you look at the consumer reports report on condoms the Planned parenthood ones performed the worst
The condoms we got there were trojan, durex and several other brands which seemd quite durable. Due to my curious nature these condoms have been tested by fitting over my head (the big one) being filed up with water (you have to try this one. stick the condom over your shower head and turn it on. the condom will fill untill the weight pulls it to the bottom of the tub where it will fill with several gallons of water. If it can strech 5 feet and hold two gallons of liquid I am pretty confidant in it's abitlity to hold up) And I also use them in the shop and for other various projects. In fact sex is probably about 10% of my use for condoms :D

The best form of birth controll and affective is Oral Sex and its Good for you. :rose:

Oh yeah forgot about that, oral/anal might work too (but you'll still want to use a condom for the latter).

I wouldnt recommend iud because my aunt had one and now she can't have kids... not a good thing. Has she tried the ring yet? I've been on it for a few months and i've had a lot less side effect compared to the pills i was on. She should really talk to a doc at pph and they could figure out a plan. i wish you too luck. also a note on the pph condums is they break really easy, and diaghams can be put in up to "x" amount of hours before sex and can be left in for hours. good luck

It disappeared for a while, but now it's back.

Yeah, but because surgical sterilization goes beyond long term (as in permanent), it's not the best way to go for someone who wants to have kids someday. Why go through a surgical procedure that you'll likely want to reverse (with questionable results) in five or ten years?
