birth control

Maybe try a Family Health Care Unit, I think you can get them there.

To my knowledge...

The closest thing to non perscription pills you can get is what would come from Planned Parenthood. But, still, there's some kind of medical exam thingy they do before putting you on the pill. Since there can be possible health problems when taking birth control pills, I think it is necessary to see a Dr. about them.

Not legally.

Even if you go to a free clinic or planned parenthood, there is a prescription involved even though you may never actually see it.

As Tiggs pointed out, there are some serious health risks possible with birth control pills. A doctor's opinion and authorization are required to insure you get the "right" pill for your metabolism.

The question didn't say birth control PILLS, just birth control.

Birth control can be condoms, spermicide, etc. You don't need a prescription for any option where you can buy it off the shelf at your local drugstore/grocery story.

good point!

Of course the absolute best birth control is also free. (if you discount the cost of psychotherapy caused by excessive abstinence. :p)

actually i was meaning pills... lately i've been considering having sex with someone i really care about, but i want to be safe. we plan to use a condom and all, but just in case it breaks or anything.... and besides, i dont really want to tell my parents that i might possibly have sex in the somewhat near future.

My turn to be curious now... How old are you? If you're a consenting adult then why would it matter what your parents thought?

i'm almost 20... but i still live at home and i'm covered by my parents medical insurance still... they just about freaked when my older sister told them she thought she should get it (about 6 years ago when she was 19) and i'm afraid to tell them. i'm the youngest child and they just admitted that i know what sex is about a year ago and for me to tell them that i want to have sex... that will just about start a war in my house.

My doc put me on Ortho Tri Cyclen

Because of my skin, which cleared up. That stuff is awesome. Is there any chance you may need it for dermatological reasons? My parents pay for mine. Haven't needed it for its originally intended purpose yet, but if i do, im good to go.

Look darlin', there's nothing mysterious about insuring that you're protected before you have sex. I applaud your maturity in wanting to protect against unwanted pregnancy in this manner.

Please consider that birth control pills will not protect you against disease transmission, however. For that, and to feel pretty sure it'll actually protect you, you'll need a condom and spermicidal jelly.

Do this:
1. Look up Planned Parenthood in your local phone book.
2. Call them. Tell them you want to come in for a visit to discuss birth control options. Make an appointment.
3. PP charges fees based on a sliding scale of ability to pay. If you have *no* money, they will still provide you with first-class service. However, if you can pay them, please do.
4. If you elect to begin birth control pills with the expectation that they'll act to prevent pregnancy, please know that they're NOT 100% infalliable. You can increase the odds against pregnancy by his using a condom and spermicidal jelly in concert with the pill.
5. Wait the amount of tie they tell you to wait (usually one full month, or one cycle) before you have sex. If you do not wait, the chemicals in the pills won't have time to do their work and your risk of accidentally ending up pregnant with increase significantly.

Old Planned Parenthood joke:
Q. You know what they call girls who use the rhythm method?
A. Mothers.

If you're going to do this sharing-bodies thing, dear, be smart about it. Get some protection and use it religiously. http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/cwm/3dlil/hearton.gif

Cymbidia,

bc pills - check!
condoms - check!

i heard that some spermicidal jelly can damage condoms. is there a kind that is condom safe? i have no need for it yet, but would be helpful when the time comes.

thanx cymbidia for the tips... i do intend to use a condom as well... i just want to cover everything just in case, especially if sumthin were to happen and the condom breaks....

i've also heard what CurlyGirl said about the spermicidal jelly... is it true?

There is no spermicidal jelly that i know of which can damage condoms. However, products that contain petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) WILL weaken the condom. Always use a non-petroleum-based lubricant, like K-Y Jelly, if you're using condoms and need some lube, too.

Go read this, please. It's called, "A Girl's Guide To Condoms" and is one of the best, no-nonsense, straightforward, relatively short pieces of info on condoms that i've ever read. http://eserver.org/feminism/guide-to-condoms.txt

Here's another good link too. It's far more "medical" but is filled with excellent info on all your birth control options. http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/student-services/healthcenter/Health-Info/Contraceptives-Page.htm

Be smart about the decisions other people make about *your* body. YOU choose what's right and best for you, and choose armed with good info.

Thanks

Maybe I read somewhere about a condom being "spermicide safe"? Oh well. Thanks for the help. Good to know there are people here willing to help. :DI will definitely check out these sites, and if needed dig up this thread when the time comes.

cymbidia

i just gotta say, your posts are always a-one....always look forward to reading your posts....thanks april

don't be skurred

Spermicide doesn't weaken condoms...in fact, the only type of condom i buy comes with spermicide protection...and ribbed for her pleasure i might add :D made by trojan...

that is all.

Are you a student in college? Most colleges and universities have student health services that can help with low-cost birth control.

Re swallowing - oral sex works great for preventing pregnancy, but remember, STD's can still be passed by oral sex. You still need to be careful.

space age technology...

There is a condom here (and I suppose in the US as well) that is not made of latex but of PVC (I think). It's thinner, stronger (jumps higher, flies faster) and isn't affected by oil. Same protection against AIDs and STDS. This is neat if you're into oil rubdowns and stuff like that because it means your condom isn't going to let you down.

On a side note it's a really sad state of affairs that you can't get birth control in the US without going through a lot of hoops (alas...I was teenager in America once). Over here young women can get bc at 16 without letting their parents know by either going to their GP or to one of the various charity agencies.

Bush can stand up there and spout abstinence all he wants but biology is biology and it means the US and Canada have the highest teen pregnancy rates, the highest STD rates, and the highest abortion rates of any industrial country. Foolish, foolish stuff.

~applauding wildly while writing another check of support to PP for the work they do~

Take it from one who has worked with young teenagers for years: Abstinence doesn't work for most kids.

Teaching abstinence is good, as long as the education is combined with good, solid information on other choices. Too often, however, and more and more often (frighteningly), kids only hear that shouldn't "do it", that they should wait. They get no useful information about what to do, where to go, how to protect themselves if they *can't* wait.

Then we end up with pregnant teenage girls who don't go to college and have trouble supporting a child. Or girls who give the baby up for adoption and wonder forever after about the child or worry whether the child will ever come looking for the mother with "why?" on its lips. Illegal abortions are on the rise in the US too, along with their attendant horrors of infection, sterility, and death.

Grim. The situation is so grim. Don't we value our teenagers enough to give them the truth in this country? Don't teens have enough self-worth to demand the truth?

I worry for my 12 year old daughter's friends, though i feel sure that my own daughter *knows* about her body and what her options will be for that time in the future when she's ready to make some choices about her sexuality.

Nothing is ever hurt by an infusion of knowledge and much can be lost by it's withholding.
