hello just wanted to ask a question my gf is on the shoot that she takes every three months just wanted to ask how well does it work and are there any women using it and what is the chance of getting pregnant???

You may want to put "depo" or "depo-provera" into the search and see what comes up. If that is the shot you are talking about you will see when you search it is a very individual opinion. Some love it, others won't touch it.

I use to be on the shot i liked it b/c it was really convieniant. I used it faithfully for 2 years, i never got pregnant while i was on it although your body tends to act as if you were pregnant i noticed a rapid weight gain while i was on it so i switched to the pill, after that i dropped my weight back down to normal.

A really good site to find any of the information out is the plannedparenthood.com you can find information on any of the birthcontrol methods. it seems pretty safe but i don't like the weight gain or the bone mass loss.

I used the shot and it did not work for me. I bled for 6 months...not the spotting they warn you about, but a heavy flow. I gained about 50 pounds, and it made me crazy. My husband was afraid to look at m sideways. Maybe I was allergic to it, I don't know, but since I used it, I've had nothing but trouble. A couple of months ago, I started to hemorrhage and had to be admitted to the hospital and put on some cocktail of Premarin and another hormone pill. My doctor thinks that it was somehow related to the shot. It was all very horrible.

But everyone is different, and if you decide that you are going to try it, I would really suggest that at the slightest hint of any problem, that you watch it closely and discuss it with your doctor at length.

You DO know that withdrawal is not a reliable form of birth control, don't you? A man's precum contains sperm, which means that a woman can get pregnant even if the man pulls out before he cums.

I doubt if you need to panic IF the shot's doing its job.

One of the reasons I decided to have a tubal after my last child was born was because, since I was 30 at the time, I didn't want to have to worry about hormones or condoms for the next 20-odd years. My mother had a hysterectomy/lymph node biopsy almost three years ago because of endometrial cancer, so the hormones made me paranoid for that reason, particularly when my doc (who's also my mom's doc) told me that there's a potential for this type of cancer to be hereditary.

I imagine that it's one of those "Your mileage may vary" issues, but Depo's not a choice that I would have made for myself, though I know women who seem to do well enough on it.

I don't know about hysterectomies, but I didn't have any trouble getting a tubal. Of course, I was 30 at the time, had just given birth to my fourth daughter, and had decided that I absolutely did not want another child, even it it WERE a son! (My reasons for opting for surgery had nothing to do with my husband being too much of a wuss to get a vasectomy.)

While my tubal was an elective procedure, the insurance company DID pay for it, probably because it's cheaper in the long run to do that than pay for more prenatal care/deliveries.

I'm 32, childless and expect to remain that way for the forseeable future as my SO has some concerns about siring a child at all since he was born with difficulty, premature, and with health issues. Adoption is looking to be more and more of a viable option for us in 5 to 7 years. I also have my own concerns about hormone birth control as I'll have to stop taking it in that same timeframe.

hey sweetie.. something to think about... problems iwth your husband when he was born, could have been alot of things... has you both talked with a health professional about his worries? could turn out to be somethign completely un controllable.... just a thought...

I was on Depo Provera for five years. The upside: no period for 4 1/2 years. The downside: I gained 30 pounds. Got off it, and the weight melted away. Weight gain is a very common side effect, and vritually impossible to lose while on the shot. I exercised like a mad woman and eat very healthily, but it didn't matter. The body thinks its pregnant and it wants the padding.

If your girlfriend wants a method that is as reliable as Depo, but with less side effects, there are birth control patches that last up to three months.

Fleatopia, have you considered an IUD? I'm getting one this week. It's expensive up front (if your insurance doesn't cover it), but they are almost as effective as the Pill, last for five years, and there is a non-hormonal version. I got tired of mucking with my system with hormonal-based birth control, and I don't like the feel of condoms, so I'm pretty excited about getting an IUD. Might be something for you to consider (and way less expensive than cutting internal bits).

yes, that happened to me also
5 months of completely fucked up periods and hormones from one shot!

turned out, my other hormones were fighting to regain the 'equilibrium' that the shot screwed up, and i got pregnant around the middle of the second month as a result.
then bled for another few months through my early pregnancy.

scary stuff.

I've had an IUD since March 1993. Very cost effective, no pregnancies. Practically no problems.

I read somewhere on here a long time ago about someone that had been on depo getting Toxemia from it and having to be in the hospital for several months and everything. She was happy up until then because she hadnt had her period, but then this alternative wasnt much fun and made a regular monthly period her friend.

For me, I've been on the pill for the last 3 years. I havent had many problems while being on it. I've gained some weight here and there, but also noticed that I can lose it easily if I eat right and exercise. I dont have many issues with being all over the place emotionally either. Since becoming sexually active, I've been enjoying my monthly friend since that is generally a reminder that we didnt screw up.

That is correct silverwhisper.
I have had this IUD for over a decade without incident.

The stories of damage caused by IUD's were mostly from the previous generation of IUD's. The current available IUD's are considered safe and mine has been great.

The funny thing about it is that I've been to the doc twice over the years, to have it removed at the time I thought they had told me it should be. They keep extending the time I can keep using it.

I don't know much about improper use.

I just researched different forms of birth control after my second child and at that time, decided this was the best form of it to serve my needs. I have been very happy with it and I certainly have "gotten my money's worth!"

a quick warning for those that had negative reactions to the shot...

you may find you also get the same from both an IUD, the patches, and the implant.

seems it's all linked to the progesterone levels.
