Birth control options while breastfeeding

Okay, I'm due in 9 days, and plan to breastfeed. My question is what types of birth control have you used or tried that are safe to use while breastfeeding. I had thought about Norplant, but my doctor doesn't recommend it, so now I'm searching for a new option. I'm not too great with taking a pill on a daily basis, but if that's what I have to do until I'm done breastfeeding than that's what I'll do. Thanks for any advice/input.

We had to use condoms. Not among my favorite choices.

I always used the Pill. Some women I know got a Depo shot before they left the hospital. It works for some, but it made my sister in law sick so you may want to read up on that one a bit more.

I would think the birth control patch would be OK to use tho. You might check with your doctor. He'd be better able to tell you.

Condoms are a good option I suppose, although not one of my favorites either. My sister was on the shot, and she had some really bad side effects, so I'm hoping to find something other than that. I checked on both the patch and the Nuvaring, and they both contain estrogen, which would dry up the milk, so they aren't options.

From the looks of it, it's going to be the mini pill, shot, IUD, or condoms. Anyone had any experience with the IUD?

I had a gf that used an IUD for years and had no problems.

First of all, breast feeding is a natural form of birth control as it turns out. Not as effective as other methods, but it does offer some protection.

The IUD is as good idea after you heal.

I didn't have a period during the time that I breastfeed my kids..

but we still used condoms as birth control. We chose those because there was no chance of any kinds of chemicals going into the breastmilk.

Well, I would have to suggest Condoms.
Your doc will talk to you about it on your 6 week check up.

Breastfeeding ISNT a good form of birthcontrol.

Ive kmnown a lot of people end up with kids 10 months apart.

boy thats no lie.. after my first child.. we used condoms. 21 months later baby #2 was born (she was planned.. we wanted them about 2 years apart).

Exactly 18 months (to the day) after baby #2 was born.. Baby #3 was born. That one night of NOT using a condom was a mistake. ;)

I took the minipill after both my kids. I had periods all through with the first one but not with the second, probably because she seemed to be glued to the breast day and night  I only had problems when she was weaning herself, when I got breakthrough bleeding. I fed both babies for around a year each.

Good luck with it :rose:

I didn't want to take anything at all while I was breastfeeding just because of the chance of it ending up in my breastmilk. So, I understand your concern. We used the rhythm method and also hoped that the breastfeeding itself would act as birth control.

course my kids ended up only 15 months apart that way too:rolleyes:

That is so wrong and women should not believe that because they are nursing a baby that , that in some way is going to protect them from an unwanted pregnancy.

Talk to your doctor and see what he recommends... take his advice.

Thanks everyone, I definately won't be using breastfeeding as my only means of birth control. This is the last child we want for at least a few years, maybe forever, so we want to make sure we don't have any suprise babies. I'd like to get an idea of what I want before my 6 week check up, so that I don't have to try and choose during the appointment.

I did ask my doctor what he recommended and his reply was "what ever you want". He's kind of a jerk like that. So I've been doing my research, and plan on bombarding him with questions about the different options I'm interested in at my next appointment.

Well, if you would have "ass"ked I would have said take a shot in the .......

Thank you freaky for that link, I didn't realize that the hormones from the mini-pill passed into breastmilk, so that gives me something more to think about.

Heavystick....I have to agree with with freaky, you can only swallow so much, and after waiting for six weeks, I'm sure he'll have quite the supply waiting for me.
