The only peoples who can effectively defeat terrorists who claim to be Muslims are the Muslim communities and nations themselves.
Every act that suggests that the terrorists are typical of the Muslim community; every insult to that community - delays the eventual defeat of the terrorists.
We need allies and friends in the Middle East and elsewhere that harbours terrorists. We need people to reject Al-Queda and its imitators as their own enemies as well as ours.
More Iraqis than allied forces have died and continue to die. We need to get the blame for the deaths placed firmly with the terrorists. Any mass killing that includes those uninvolved with any fighting against Iraqi authorities does not help to build a better Iraq.
The British used bayonets - you have to be face to face to use a bayonet. There is no doubt that the person in front of you is an enemy. With a rifle, a machine gun at a 1000 yards - how can you be sure that person fired at you? With a rocket or bomb there is even less certainty.
