How big are you talking about? My wife has a strap on that's 8 inches long and about 2 inches in diameter, and I love that.

In my experience, it's all about preparation. The sphincter muscle is just like any other muscle: it prefers to be warmed up before strenuous exercise. So lots of fingers and lube before the main event.
