Big Problems -- Need Help

1) My left leg is injured pretty badly. Sprained muscle, and torn ligament

2) My job (at FedEx) requires me to be on my feet all night getting into trucks and unloading packages. My work release form from the hospital expires tonight and I'm supposed to go back tonight at 11. I won't be able to work tonight. The only reason I'm going in is to talk to my supervisor about what's going on.

3) I don't think I'll be able to continue working at FedEx and I need to know some good search engines for finding "sit down jobs."

4) Is there something I can file for (i.e. unemployment) while I'm between jobs with my fucked up knee?

Are there any other suggestions or advice anyone can supply me with? Anything would be very helpful.....

I don't know much about online job searches. I think you can probaby file for temporary disability or something if you can get your doctor and you employer to agree to it. Is this a work-related injury or did it happen off the clock? If you have insurance at FedEx, you might want to try and keep up your COBRA insurance plan if you do leave your job. Switching insurance while you have a pre-existing condition is a huge mistake. Also, it might not hurt to see if your superviser has the ability to find you something not physical within the company.
 
I'm not to sure about your states unemplyment laws so you should check into it. I'm sure they have them online.

One thing that is common among many states. If you quit your job, it's much more diffacult to get unemployment than if you get laid off. THer is a difference. Talk with your supervisor at work. They may be able to lay you off if you can no longer fulfull your duties. If you quit, it may be much harder to get benifits from the state. Talk with you boss, he/she may know. Your workplace should have the ifo for you on how to collect if you get laid off. I believe that they are supposed to.

Typically you have to be out of work for at least 2 weeks before you can begin to collect. I'm not really sure about the disability. Probablly requires screenings, letters from docs... etc.

Not really sure on the rest of it. Maybe try Monster.com?

Excellent point. Fed Ex is a major company and they may have something for you, even if it's only temporary.

I theory, unemployment is supposed to enable you to keep a roof over your head while you find the sit down job. In theory, worker's comp is supposed to do that and let you pay for retraining, but I have to assume you didn't hurt it on the job. Right?

Unemployment won't be available, most places, if you still have a job, though.
 
Have you been back to the doctor recently? I would have expected them to extend it if your leg was still so bad. I agree that your company ought to be able to re-assign you. If it comes to disability, don't take no for an answer, that is the first line of defense with government agencies. Monster.com is a good job search engine but also check your state web site for a job bank America's Job Bank is where New York dumps things into. It is www.ajb.dni.us
 
I don't have insurance. Insurance doesn't come with the job until you've been working for a year, so I don't have to worry about that. I have to go in to at least talk to my supervisor about what's going on tonight, so asking him about a non-mobile temp. position couldn't hurt...however...I don't think I've noticed an non-mobile positions for peons like me....lol....and not on the midnight shift.

I think it's funny, CD, that I was actually saying something to a friend of mine about asking my supervisor to fire me. So that's actually a possibility?

I'm nervous.

Hey cant....no I didn't hurt it on the job, but I'm worried it's going to look funny to my employer, the reason being because I twisted my knee (minor) at work a couple of weeks ago, and now at home I hurt it, but I'm afraid they're going to make a connection between the two. Furthermore, if we're injured at work and go to the hospital without clearing it with the supervisor = major trouble. So even though this injury didn't occur at work, I don't want them thinking I hurt it at work even though I said I didn't...and then get fired for it.

There's 3 diffrent things, Quit, Laid off and Fired.

The ideal is Laid off. This means that you were a productive employee that just got cut for whatever reason. You weren't stealing, slacking, general fucking off, breaking the rules at work... whatever. Your unemployment isn't really your fault. THe company simply didn't need you anymore.

THe other 2, Fired and Quit are lsee desireable. Fired = they canned your ass for fucking up (for whatever reason). This means that you were at least partly at fault.

Quit means that you walked away from a paying job on your own. Your job was still available and you chose not to keep it, also your fault.

These 2nd two make it harder to collect unemployment, at least around here. Like I said, you should check your states laws, they may be different.

My right leg is injured badly, aside from other health excusues. If you are on your ass and creative? Why can't you find jobs? You can - THINK! Thinking is the best advice - what do you want? Jobs do not come to the door - one goes after them. ;)

Thanks Charley...this I know...I'm going to do some heavy research after work tonight and see what I can come up with. I actually asked about that online survey stuff too....

Yes, be very cautious about the quit vs. laid off thing. I think Cheerful has is right - you want to get laid off.

One suggestion: Every state requires employers to purchase workers compensation insurance for workers injured on the job. If your injury happened on the job then you are covered for medical expenses and probably much more.

Here's the deal: Injury claims increase an employers premiums, and they don't like that. Offer to work with the employer to avoid a larger claim by doing alternative work, and also by using physicians and clinics the company has a relationship with. (Don't worry - the doctors won't sell you down the river - you'll still get good treatment.)

I can't speak for a particular employer, but if I'm the boss and an employee understands my challenges and wants to work with me to reduce costs, I would be grateful and do it.

If they are willing to accomodate you, make them glad they did so by really being a great employee.

Of course all this assumes that your injury is work related.
 
Yay for good news!!!

I called my supervisor right before I planned to leave for work and he told me the only way they could put me on light duty is if I got injured there at work. However, he told me not to worry about coming in OR getting laid off OR fired. Instead he told me to rest up...if it took a week or two or three then so be it, but to keep him updated and my job would be waiting for me whenever I healed.

So...best supervisor award goes to......Matt F. !!!!!!!

You have my sympathies. I worked at UPS for a summer. I loved the job and got promoted to a sorter quickly. After two weeks, I developed tendinitis in my shoulder. They put me on light duty for two or three days, then told me to get back on the line or go home. I tried for another day, but couldn't lift my arm above my shoulder. They let me go and had a non-rehire policy. It wasn't a great job, but had health insurance and I thought it was fun to work so hard. Glad your boss is nicer than mine.

Remember, injuries require ice & heat (ice to reduce swelling and increase blood flow...heat to work on the flexibility). Unless they are serious, then talk to your doctor.
