Erdogan’s Islamist Party Suffers Historic Defeat in Mayoral Elections in Turkey After 22 Years — Secular Party Surpasses Ruling Party for First Time Sparking Nationwide Celebrations (VIDEO)

By Jim Hᴏft Apr. 1, 2024 9:30 am

The political landscape of Turkey has undergone a seismic shift after Sunday’s local elections.

The main secular opposition, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), seized control of key cities and broke President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamic-oriented Justice and Development Party (AKP) ‘s 22-year rule.

The CHP not only retained its hold over Istanbul and Ankara but also extended its influence to traditionally AKP-dominated provinces. With over 90% of the votes counted, Istanbul’s incumbent Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu (CHP) and Ankara’s Mayor Mansur Yavas (CHP) celebrated resounding victories, indicating a substantial change in the public’s sentiment towards Erdogan’s rule, AP reported.

The AKP, in contrast, witnessed its support plummet nationwide, garnering only 36% of the votes against the CHP’s 37%.

Has anyone seen this on their TV news?

All dictators need to be shown the door.

To answer the question posed by the OP: yes, the major news outlets who aren't the garbage Pundit are all carrying the story.

Also, the thread starter can't find Turkey on a map.

I saw this on the news last evening. It would appear religious-backed authoritarianism is on the way out in Turkey.

What does this mean for the United States?

Probably little more than one less possible destination for Trump to seek asylum.

It may also mean a delay in a Turkish invasion of Gaza as well.

I'm surprised that the O.P. isn't actually on Erdogan's side in this. He has always openly expressed admiration for totalitarian and autocratic forms of government, much like Erdogan's regime, and has openly stated his wish to see such a government established in the United States.

Ironically, after 2024, the U.S. could end up like Turkey was under Erdogan, and Turkey could move into a society more like the U.S. was 10 years ago.
