I found a new cycle path the other day. It’s not that far from my house and ribbons deep out into the countryside. There are no cars and plenty of hills and valleys that are completely awesome to hurtle along. For all of about 24 hours, I truly believed I’d found my dream route.

Then I picked up the local newspaper…

It turned out there’d been a Big Cat sighting on that very lane. It’s surrounded by fields, and the creature had been spotted by a group of trees. It was described as black, long-tailed and about the size of an Alsation. Its movements were smooth and more reminiscent of a cat that any dog.

So this afternoon I went back out there to investigate… and guess what? I’ll admit that I have a crazy imagination, but in the distance I did see something black sidling past a gate. I watched for a little while, but then it vanished, and I didn’t quite have the balls to cycle on and investigate further.

I know there are lots of people out there who say that Big Cat sightings are a load of sensationalist bullshit, but I really do think they’re out there. There’s so much photographic evidence, and a lot of these cats were kept as exotic pets in the '70s – until the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976 made it illegal to keep them without a licence. I’ve heard stories of people releasing them into the countryside and I’ve also read articles about the possibility that they’re breeding.

I think I’m pretty safe on this path, because there are quite a few horses and cows in the fields around me – apparently panthers only attack people when they’ve run out of prey that’s easier to kill.

But what are people’s thoughts on this? Do you believe there are big cats in the UK? Has anyone ever seen one? From now on I’m taking my camera phone with me when I go out cycling. If I get a decent shot, I’ll let you know! :p

I believe 'em.

The "Beast of Bodmin Moor" was never proven, but it's very feasible that a big cat has, at some point, escaped from a zoo or safari park, or got out into the countryside by some other means, and mated with a domestic cat - imagine that, cute little moggy being shagged by a puma - I bet the ladies went wild for him, anyway, I digress... So, yes, a generation of not-quite-so-big-big-cats could well have been spawned and spread throughout the UK.

I live in hope, anyway. Perhaps they'll eat some of the fox hunters for tea. ;)

I've heard of this before...hey if we can have Big foot...you can have Big cats.

My girlfriend spent a Friday night searching for a Yeti in the outskirts of Newcastle, a couple of years ago...
