I am a Biden supporter, but Trump seems to sound better. Nevertheless, Trump often avoids the questions, and says what he wants to say. The moderator should call Trump on that.

The only ones who would assume the donald's lies were true were the ones who wouldn't listen to the truth anyway. Most of the lies he told are retreads. How many times have we heard about "open borders"? Hundreds. so once more isn't going to convince a person one way or the other.

Now that doesn’t excuse the poor performance / presentation from President Biden, which may have been a combination of a cold and poor prep, (not that that is a good look either) but if eloquent speakers can’t verbally pin down that LYING orange bowl of jello shit, then President Biden really can’t be expected to - even on his best day.

I'm not so sure. Consider "I invented the Internet." There are still people 25 years later who believe Al Gore really said that! Why? Because no one bothered to counter it at the time.

And yes, Trump was going to harp on the border issue no matter what. But that's all the more reason why Biden should have been prepared to set the record straight on that one, to establish once and for all that no, he does not have an open-border policy, and that Trump's claims are nothing but a baldfaced lie.

He did try to set the record straight. With the time limitations of the debate he couldn't go into it in depth as it required. A simple "Donald that's false. You need to do your homework." would have sufficed to show he knew it was false. Then he could have gone on to answer the questions from the moderator. Instead, he tried to get down in the mud with donald. It's an old, old truth, you can't beat an expert on their own ground.
