Let’s hope a prolonged ILA strike doesn’t compound the suffering of those impacted by Helene, spawn another spike of Bidenflation, or cripple the economy. Biden promised to give Big Labor more power and he’s delivering it now at East and Gulf coast ports.

Will he invoke the Taft-Hartley Act? He said on Sunday that he doesn’t believe in it. We’ll see. ILA Boss Daggett is projecting big time swagger, boasting “they won’t be able to do anything in this country without my people”

This could get very ugly very fast.

Longshoremen have come to recognize their profession is rapidly dwindling due to the rise of container ships and crane operations. They are superfluous for the most part nowadays.

The West Coast is increasingly automated, they can run an entire port on a dozen crane operators, a computer programmer and maybe a skeleton repair staff. They can run 16 hours a day (cranes don't require time-and-a-half over 40 hours) and the biggest ones run 24 hours a day. The tonnage imported from Asia justifies the immense investment required to create the automated facilities.

The East Coast handles much smaller tonnage from Europe and Africa, but trade is growing. Longshoremen want to lock in job security via longterm employment contracts now, as they'll never have a better time: It's an election year, labor is mostly a core Democratic demographic, they realize they are fucked if Trump is selected, and they can and do exert maximum pressure on a Democratic incumbency one month before a critical election.

It's a cynical ploy, but I can't blame them. In any event, they'll likely be a thing of the past within the next 30 years.

Daggett is an ole style thug. Computerization, automation is with us to stay. To push for a contract that excludes modernization is a losing cause. Increasing input and output will also increase demand for human capital. Daggett is doing a giant disservice to his brothers and sisters denying them the ability to adjust to future technology. Daggett is a knuckle dragging dinosaur.
IMHO

You trumptards complained about McDonald's going automated. Why can't you trumptards be consistent other than being consistently stupid?

A short delay will bring us back to our kneeling pandemic...

He should have already invoked it, sent in the National Guard and J6'd any longshoreman not on the job, but he will not; like the Iranians, these guys are on his team – he's paralyzed now by indecision and not just the usual, expected and anticipated, decrepitation but a real concept comfortably compartmentalized in his mind, yet at conflict with other concepts like protecting the fucking consumer (from being ripped off by Big Business and it's painfully ironic that it's Big Government buggering us instead)!

(Please forgive me if/when I channel my former blue-collar union-steward self.)

Republicans: If you can't afford to live on minimum wage, get a better job/education.

Also Republicans: Where the hell are the fast food workers?
They do.

Your comments fell on the wrong ears.

Next time, talk to your team, the Democrats, Iranians and longshoremen, OH MY!

I just saw a poll. Despite their leadership, The Docks are MAGA country...

... all those longshoreman can't be wrong, right?

We do depend upon them.

You'll see.

Soon...

Somebody should tell the longshoremen that now is not the time.

Doesn't the government rig these things for the election? Deep state!

It’s always cute how babyboo comes and tries to portray his brand of caring conservatism. He would laugh at any liberal starting a thread that asks his anti-union president to not use scab workers or pay the hundreds (not hyperbole) of contractors who gave labor to trump without due compensation.

To no one's surprise.
