Beyond Time (closed)

"That's another question entirely... but I think at least Christopher can reach her, and so can Ma and Vincenzo. She can make it with them for now," Ashien sighed. "Eventually she'll be ready to welcome her siblings in again too."

"I'm sure you'll be the first one she welcomes back with open arms." Dylan said, knowing that it bothered him more than he was letting on. "So, my dear husband, what shall we do this afternoon? Paint? Sleep? Make love until neither of us can move a muscle?"

"Maybe a bit of each," Ashien murmured as they entered their room. He let out a long sigh and slumped into a chair after tossing aside his jacket to the edge of the bed. But as he looked up once more, he offered a hand out to welcome Dylandra.

Dylan took his hand and gladly sat in his lap with a long sigh. She tucked her blond head against his chest, content to simply be with her husband in a quiet moment.

“You know, I like your accent creeping in now that you’re home. I think it’s sexy.” She said with a small grin.

Combing his fingers through her golden hair, Ashien smiled lightly. "There's that little reminder again, that you're from another place and time. It makes you seem exotic in some ways."

“No one’s ever thought of me as exotic.” Dylan said as Ash’s clever fingers combed through her thick hair, making her relax even more.

"Well, they weren't looking hard enough. Twelfth or twenty-first century, you're a unique one to say the least." His fingers paused in her hair and drew her in for another kiss.

“You are just a smooth talking charmer.” Dylan murmured as he pulled her in with another kiss, his hand cradling the back of her head.

"Blame my mother, she could charm the leaves off the trees if she wanted to," Ashien chuckled softly, meeting her gaze in a quiet moment of appreciation

“And I adore you for who you are.” Dylan said softly as his dark gaze stared into her own. “You are the perfect husband. I truly believe that.”

"Then I'll have to keep you away from better men, because I most certainly am not," he chuckled once more. "Far from it, love."

Ashien rested his head against her own for a long moment before a thought came to him. "... Ma mentioned something I wasn't expecting recently.... Just a passing comment, really... She said a family would do me good, like Durban's does for him... Have you two been talking about it at all?"

“I mentioned that we were thinking about it.” Fiona answered in all honesty. “And we have talked about it.”

"She seems to think I need something new to focus on. But after this war... I'm not so sure I want to bring a child into the world with a father who can't even cope with thunder and nightmares," he muttered.

“Ash, we’ve talked about this. I think you’d be a great father. Any child would be lucky to have you in their lives.” Dylan said softly as Ash talked about his doubts about becoming a father.

"I don't know. It's not something we can just try and change our minds if it doesn't work..." Ashien met her gaze once more. "I'd rather wait on it a while longer."

“There’s no rush.” Fiona said, touching his cheek gently. “I just figured that we wouldn’t do anything to stop it from happening. If it happens, it happens.”

"And what about you?" Ashien asked quietly, studying her gaze. "You haven't said much about it really. You say we could let it happen, but you never say exactly what it is you want, or what sorts of plans or what kind of mother you want to be. Am I really the only one overthinking it all the time?"

"Ash, there's not much that I can tell you about how I will be as a mother. I've never been a mother. I know that I will love any child that might come our way. It doesn't matter if they are a girl or a boy. Just as long as they are happy and healthy I'll be fine." Dylan said softly as he asked her about her opinion on the matter.

"I do feel frightened about the idea of giving birth here in this time. I won't have the machines or the highly skilled doctors to take the pain away or make sure that the baby is alright through the entire ordeal. That's daunting to think about. But, when I imagine holding a little baby that looks just like you...it all feels right." She said, looking into his dark gaze.

"We may not have miracle-working doctors in sterile white buildings like your grandfather told me about... But we have the werefolk. And anything humans can't hope to do in medicine, they seem to manage with ease. And anything they can't cure, they can treat beautifully. I think you're in fairly good hands. And we'll of course have Vincenzo, who's one of the best human doctors in the world," he assured her, feeling confident in that at least.

“I can’t promise that we will be good parents, Ash. But I know that we can give any child we bring int our family a loving and happy home.” Dylan said softly as he seemed so uncertain about this step in their future.

Ashien simply nodded, pressing his forehead to her own and closing his eyes. Early in their marriage, he'd been so confident and bright in spirit. It seemed this war had stripped away a few layers. He was still her Ashien, only more cautious and fearful of the darker corners of the world.

“There’s nothing to be afraid of with me, Ashien. I will love you no matter what happens.” She said softly as he leaned his head against her own, closing his eyes to lose himself from the darkness that had creeped into his life.

Ashien seemed to relax just a little more at her words, and soon he was dozing rather peacefully. A far cry from the restless or nightmarish sleep he knew too often.
