Beyond the Secretary...

For me the worst part of Liasons was when Keaneau Reeves shows up. As he's standing on the frozen moat/river calling up to the windows I just always expect him to punctuate his sentences with a proper 'dude'.

I agree with you. Keanu Reeves was way too much of a goofy light-weight for that movie. Not at all believable.

John Malkovich, on the other hand, was the definition of "sexy-ugly." Perfect for the character. Repulsive yet somehow appealing.

Oh yeah. Malkovich wasn't pretty and just managed to ooze nastiness in that movie.

See, I don't get the great Keanu and Malcovich lust either. I liked being John Malcovich, very good movie, but the whoel JM as lust object? I'm starting to develop some sort of complex cause my lust is out of step with everyone I know.

You mean there are people who actually do lust after Malcovich?! Ewwwwww! I thought Valmont was an appealing character, in a creepy, evil kinda way, but JM is really repulsive. It was the combination of an appealing character and a repulsive actor that I thought worked well.

And Keanu Reeves is just too much of a girl for my tastes. I mean, as a man, he's too much of a girl. He wasn't bad in "The Replacements," though.

Keanu wasn't too bad in The Watcher. It's a serial killer thriller that also stars .... James Spader. He also played his part fairly well in Point Break, was meant to be a bit nerdy & of course he was sharing the screen with Patrick Swayze, now don't get me started on Patrick mmmmmmm

I must have mis-read something while half-asleep or just didn't adequately express myself. I was under the impression (perhaps totally and completely wrong) that while you enjoyed it there was a different version of the story that you felt was much better.

Ahh... The confusion might have been derived from my comment refferencing "Cruel Intentions." I adored all the other versions, including the classic, yet suprisingly unheard of "Les Liasons Dangereuces," starring Rupert Everett and Catherine Deneuve. Just a side note that if you enjoy Deneuve's role in this one, "Belle De Jour" is another recommendation (providing you can tolerate subtitles.)

Les Liasons was actually the first version I watched, and what inspired me to rent all the others. I still have not read the book, and am not even certain if it is printed in English.

I relate with your comment about Reeves portraying the musician. The role just didn't seem to suit him well, even despite the remarkable job he did in Bram Stroker's "Dracula." I highly suggest giving the Colin Firth or afore mentioned French version a try. Both Everett and Firth play a remarkable Valmont.

Agreed. I'm not at all attracted to JM on a physical level, but he plays such a fantastic villan that you can't help but love him. I thought him a wise choice for Valmont, and even developed a bit of a crush near the end. His facial expressions were pure gold.

... Though my erotic fantasies still consistantly cast Firth or Everest in that role. ;)

Eeps! If you thought Reeves too much of a girl in Liasons, DON'T rent the other versions. He actually portrayed more of a masculine character by comparison.

Okay, so obviously I am the only one who has a genuine attraction for Malkovich. Don't know why or how, but I think he is wonderful...all over....even when I watched him in one of the recent Of Mice and Men movies, I couldn't help think of him in that way.

:D

I hold the great belief that beauty is not always skin deep. Some people just excude a natural aura of appeal that is inexplicible. I love that my tastes can be evolved souly based on someone's persona, because that means I don't have to compete with my friends who tend to only chase after the tight-assed football player types.

Look at Billy-Bob and Angelina. C'mon now. There had to have been more to her attraction than meets the eye!

P.S. If you enjoyed JM in " Of Mice and Men," check out Billy-Bob in "Slingblade."

James Spader does it for me, lonnngggg before Secretary (which I didn't much like either). I loved his character in Sex Lies & Videotape and there's another fairly weird movie of his about people who reenact fatal car crashes.
My girlfriend adores James Spader! I'm not sure why. I liked him best in Secretary, for obvious reasons!

Yep. I don't mind subtitles. I loved Tres Hommes et un Couffin (sp?). It was the original french version of Three Men and a Baby. I also have a bunch of Japanese and German films as well. Though I don't actually have to use the subtitles for some of them.

Les Liasons was actually the first version I watched, and what inspired me to rent all the others. I still have not read the book, and am not even certain if it is printed in English.

It's in English. I remember a friend of mine reading a copy for some paper in his Grad program.

I have been told that "Eyes Wide Shut" has some potential, so I guess I'm going to finally give that one a go this evening (despite my better judgment.) I'll let you all know.

I have my fingers crossed that its not all mushy like I imagine it.

Who told you it had potential? I haven't heard anythign close to that. Even from rabid Tom Cruise fans.

Talk about timing! You caught me just as I was about to run to the vid store. Guess I'll go get drunk instead. :D

Thanks :rose:

Oh Helene, you don't know how lucky you were, talk about Porn of the Dead !!!

Actually, the story does have potential. It's just that it was made by an elderly & very confused old man & the 2 stars had about as much chemistry between them as cardboard boxes. I always thought it was a huge waste of a good story.

Not to discourage you from a night of drinking, but I wasn't trying to sway you against giving it a try.

Weren't the two stars Nicole and Tom? Bad chemistry?

Quite alright. I was looking for an excuse to do it anyway.:D

I heard this complaint about the movie a lot. Tom and Nicole had absolutely ZERO chemistry between the two of them on-screen. I guess then it's not too surprising that they ended up divorced, huh?

OK this is gonna be interesting.

You have all probably watched the movie.

"My Cousin Vinny"

Its a comedy about Joe Pesci as a "don't have a clue" layer from brooklyn, who ends up in southern Alabama trying to defend his cousin and his friend on a murder charge.

Now why do I think this movie has anything to do with this thread...

Enters "Marisa Tomei"..(wow blood pumping now!)

Her performance in this movie smacks of the most delicious bratty submissive. When you first watched it, it might not have registered in that way, but I just re-watched it today, and man oh man, a must re-watch from this perspective will have you laughing.

A perfect combination of sexy and brattiness ever seen.

If nothing else, its still an enjoyable funny movie to watch. If you do re-watch it with this in mind, let me know if you agree.

It was the film they made as their marriage was hitting the skids. I think they were seperated by the time it came out. Until recently, it looked like she had custody of the career!:p

Well, I have to admit that niether Tom nor Nicole rate very high on my physical attraction scale anyway. If I'm going to watch a steamy love scene, would much preffer it to be involving someone who doesn't look like the wimpy guy who got beaten up everyday after school.

I think they should have gotten Jolie and the bloke who plays Christian on Nip/Tuck. (I would have said Colin Firth, but that would have been far too predictable, and would likely taint my wholesome image of him.)

It has been so long since I have seen that movie, that I may just take you up on that. For some unknown reason, my brain always confuses My Cousin Vinny with Scent of a Woman.

Whenever I picture Nicole with him, I always envision her holding a crop and telling him to lick the heel of her shoe.

Perhaps that is why Tom just doesn't do it for me.
