Metallica's drummer. That guy can keep a solid, kick-ass beat rhythym twice the speed of anyone else I've ever heard. the rest of Metallica does well, too. My favorite part of their music is the lyrics, closely followed by the guitarwork and then the drumming.

What can I say, it's a new obsession.

So who were you before you were Always? I can't help thinking of maxipads when I see your name now. Sorry. It's true. :(

Lars Ullrich.

He's the least talented member of the band, or so say my musician friends who tell me they know what they're talking about.

He's also a really big asshole.

Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)

(Metallica? Oh please, maybe in the 80's but they are pure corporate whores now.)

My two year old nephew on the saucepans. He can play those spoons like no one else. And as for duration? he can out bang any of those old farts you have mentioned. Trust me on this.

Don't get me started on his rendition of America the Beautiful. I swear, I had tears in my eyes.

PHIL COLLINS- Lead singer and drummer of "Genesis"

Sorry, I don't know his name but the drummer in Earth, Wind, & Fire in the song, "Happy Feelings".

Hey, look, I don't waste my time memorizing band member's names. Get over it.

GuyJD has a point.. Phil Collins (and the rest of Genesis) is/was/will forever be great.

Yeah, Metallica is a bunch of "corporate whores" and sellouts, but their music is good. Most particularly the early stuff. They might be in it for the money, but I'm in them for the music.

Most big celebrities tend to be assholes. If they aren't, I'd die of shock. You'd think that once they were famous and rich, they'd be BETTER people, but no... logic doesn't apply to RockStars.

Lars Ullrich, then. He knows what he's doing. He might be an ass, but that doesn't mean he can't play his instrument.

He may not be the best Drummer, but

He was the funniest...........

Mickey Dolenz from The Monkees!!!!!

(Anyone remember that show)

The Fly keeps buzzing along.......BZZZZZZ

kgboot

Gene Krupa (sp?)...

The Drummer that could change a Song the most was John Bonham...He ruined it for me in regards to todays fake drums:cool:

My previous one was a joke but I'd say the hands down, no joke best rock drummer ever both in ability and the way he added to a band was Keith Moon. Or Matt Cameron.

aren't you forgetting someone?

i think if you ask most accomplished drummers -- Neil Peart, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Coliuta, Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Joe Morello, Bill Bruford, etc.. -- they'll point you back to on eperson:

Buddy Rich.

as if his duet with Animal from the muppets wasn't enough, Buddy Rich revolutionized jazz and rock drumming to the extent that his chops are STILL being replicated and admired today. The man was incredible.

Also, you have to make a distinction between rock drummers and jazz drummers. not to make a generalization, but the latter can usually drum circles around the former. however, jazz by its nature is a more complex music than rock, which usually sticks to 4/4 time ad nauseum.

it's pointless to argue who was the "best" drummer. the good ones are were good at one aspect or another and it really doesn't matter who was faster than who, or who could play the most triplet fills, etcetera.

look at it this way: the best drummer is the drummer who makes the music stand out the most WITHOUT calling undue attention to him or herself.

cheers,

bluetrain!

excellent answer.
you got my vote for Buddy.

EBW..i love Animal!!

the drum duel between Animal and Buddy is a real classic!

I don't know if he's the best drummer but I've always been a fan of Cozy Powell. He's a Brit drummer who worked with such greats as Jeff Beck, Black Sabbath, and Brian May.

Of course, being the Queen fan that I am, I would also have to vote for Roger Taylor :)

Bill Bruford - Yes, King Crimson and quite a few others.

Terry Bozio - Frank Zappa and quite a few others as well.

yeah, especially when animal throws the snare over buddy's head!

anyway, you gotta be careful of superlatives like "best." for instance, a few people here have voted for phil collins. my gut reaction is: "please! drop the crack pipe! neil peart or beauford carter can tease the sticks off phil without him even waking up from his over-produced haze!"

however, my training in african and cuban percussion has taught me that the best drummer is the one you probably don't hear because he/she is keeping the rhythm going like clockwork, and everyone else is relying on him/her for timekeeping.

yes, neil and beauford, etc, are better technical drummers than phil. but look at the way phil weaves percussion into his songs. its mastery, just as all good drummers know the exact sound and tone each song needs for it to shine.

in other words, how many people wnat to listen to an album of nothing but drumming?

a great young drummer

the chick who plays drums for kittie (a hard rock band i had heard on a trip in a club in canada).

mercedes is an intese drummer, not saying she's the best, just that she's great.

ok, p_c, ur welcome to tear my choice apart now for being pop culture and someone young. :D

i can't help liking the bands that i do that are new. hell, almost every band i like that is new is a group i heard before they got popular or on mtv. and as far as hard rock, well, i used to be the vocals (notice i didn't say singer lol) for a few hard rock bands when i was in high school. and besides, most teenagers can identify with the angst of this replacement for grunge.

Neil Pert of Rush, without doubt.

I've more or less outgrown my Rush phase, but bloody hell, can that man do amazing things with both sides of his brain and two hands.

Carter Buford/Dave Mathews doesn't suck, either.

Of the band drummers, Buddy Rich was probably the best.

I avoid rock noise, so can not comment on any of them.

There was a bongo drummer in Brasil durring the sixtys that could make more rhyyhmic music with ten fingers than almost anyone else I've ever heard. The man was awesome to watch.
