High: Alabama wins 1992 National Championship in spectacular fashion. Beating overhyped Miami like a bunch of punk ass bitches in the Sugar Bowl.

Low: 1985 World Series with the botched call at first base. St. Louis Cardinals fans everywhere were on the verge of Umpirecide. I heard that ump still changes phone numbers from time to time.

What are some of yours?

Well

Both involve myself.
18 and under hard ball.
The provincial championship in Manitoba Canada.
I caught a fly ball that was going over the fence and felt on top of the world.
Three innings later I lost an easy one in the sun and could not stare at the sun any longer waiting for it to come out. It landed beside me.
Sigh...
The best not playing was when Canada beat the Russians in the 1972 Hockey series. Paul Henderson scored the winning goal.

Best/Worst

BEST:

1969 New York Mets! "Ya gotta believe" and we did!

1994 New York Rangers!! As a sign quoted "Now I can die in peace!".

WORST:

2000 Subway Series
with "damn" Yankees beating the Mets.:(

Highs: Giants destroying the Cubs in the '89 NLCS.
Derek Jeter retiring to tour as a backup singer with Mariah Carey.
The Colorado Avalanche winning their first Stanley Cup ('95 I think). The first year I paid much attention to the playoffs and I hated the Red Wings in the semis.

Lows: '86 World Series.
Being a Sox fan in general.

My best sports memory:

My first major league baseball game - at Fenway. I was probably 6 or 7. I'll always remember how green the grass was, how good the hot dog tasted, and my Dad telling me "I've waited a long time for this."

Worst sports memory:

Roberto Clemente dying in a plane crash.

Best: John Elway coming back a final year, and winning the MVP in Super Bowl 33.

Worst is a tie:

Waiting 10 years to see him play, driving to Veterans Stadium, facing the crowd in my Bronco Colors and having him get knocked out before the first quater was over.

Going to the Bengals game, fully decked out, and having Corey Dillon break the rushing record against them. Taking the wrong stairs down afterward, coming out to where the Broncos were coming out of the locker room and being blown off by Griese.

(He got his DUI the next day. Gotta love Karma)

best- hmm. Probably seeing Hank Aaron go yard in Atlanta as a child.

On a personal level, sinking a 40 foot putt on the 18th green at the age of 16 to put me and my 16 yr old partner in the finals of a club championship that we ended up winning.

worst- Payne Stewart dying in a plane crash.

Getting picked of 3rd base in senior little league as a rookie on the old, secretly pass the ball to the 3rd baseman play and tag out the runner when he steps off base. That one still hurts :)

Bests - Being 7 yrs. old, walking up the entrance ramp to Yankee Stadium and seeing the field in all its glory, and understanding at once what it means to be "major league". Mantle, Berra, and Maris were all out there around the batting cage!

Watching an entire Redskins/Dallas Monday Night Football game from down on the playing field.

Worst - Also when I was 7 years old, in a Little League baseball game. I was at bat and actually hit the ball, for the very first time! (Well, maybe the ball just hit off of my bat.) Being shocked and amazed at the bat/ball contact, I hesitated, and then started running. To third base. You might imagine the rest.

Reminds me of the old getting tagged out at second base after the 2nd baseman talks briefly with the ump and tells you to get off the bag because the umpire said to dust it off trick.

Fuck. I HATED when that happens.

Some of my best and worst sports memories mean something only to those people who attended the same University...
furiously coming back and scoring three goals in the last two minutes to send the lacrosse game versus our biggest rivals into overtime, only to lose in overtime as we have a shot bounce off the pipe, they pick it up, go the other way and score to win the dang game (a best and worst)

and another personal one...playing golf with my dad when he made his one and only hole in one :)

Best major college and Olympic memories...

The father coming out of the stands to help his son with the torn hamstring (or some other leg muscle) finish the 400 meters

UVA beating FSU for Florida State's first ACC loss ever

Marxist, my family has had season tickets with the Cards for years, so I was at the park for that BOTCHED call.

A local DJ gave out his phone number, the next morning, and that's when the troubles started for Mr. D.

I also was there when McGwire hit most of his homeruns in 1998, including 60-62 and 66-70, and it all started off on opening day wtih a grand slam, a first in Cardinals history for opening day.

So there you have my best and worst.

Honorable mentions go to seeing in person, Wayne Gretzky play the the Blues. MY autographed Bud Ice Hockey stick from some of teh blues players. OH want meeting Cal Ripken last August in K.C. and of course getting his autograph.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

Stars winning the Stanley Cup, the first time.

That so-called victory is tainted. Brett Hull's skate was in the crease so that "winning" goal should have been disallowed. I hated that crease rule but they'd been calling it scrupulously all season long, so it should not have counted!

Yeah, Branford Marsalis even wrote a song to commemorate the event - too funny at his concert that summer afterwards (given that the NHL playoffs don't finish until the end of June, maybe it was only a few days later). It was his first song of the night, dedicated to Brett Hull, "a piece we call, 'In the crease'"

Best sporting event for me was this past year's Grey Cup in Montreal, for the atmosphere more than anything... oh yeah, and watching the Blue Bombers lose! :p

I agree, that really was awesome!

Little fucking bastard

Worst-
its a tie-
waking up and hearing Len Bias died

&

Jeffery Meier, that little punk, and the nerve of fucking dickhead rudy, the next day the kid is in the mayor's box -- i guess cheating does get you somewhere in life

Best-

the miracle on ice -- amazing, even on my shitty 7 inch b&w

Best: The times I got to see Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris play with the New York Yankees.

Worst: When the teams in baseball started changing and trading players so frequently you no longer felt like they were a "home" team.

Best: Saw the sixth game of the '77 World Series, when Reggie Jackson hit three homers against the Dodgers. Took the 'A' train back into the City, rocking on the trax to chants of "Reggie--Reggie." Fabulous.

Worst: (On t.v. only), Buckner's Boot that kept the sixth game of the '86 Series going, and ultimately lost the Series for the Sox. Has to be among the saddest scenes in the history of the game. Curse of the Bambino? Cub effect? Tragedy on the scale of OEdipus Rex.

Best: The Mariners beating the Yankee's in game 5 of the division series in 95. Joey Cora and Ken Griffey Jr. scored on a double from Edgar Martinez with two outs in the 11th inning after the Yankee's had taken the lead in the top of the inning. The M's had lost the first two games in N.Y. and came back to win the final three at home.

Worst: The Mariners losing to the Yankee's this year in the A.L.C.S. After having one of the greatest season's in the history of baseball and then to lose to the Yankee's for the second straight year was almost unbearable.

Best and Worst Memories in Sports=====>

Best: When my son was 8 years old, he played Little League baseball. He was not a very strong fielder, but he tried very hard. One day, in a very close game, a ball was hit to him in the outfield. It was one of those verrry high fly balls. As I watched him get under it I prayed that he would catch it. He did, and I cried with tears of joy.

Worst: During the 1972 Olympics, Arab terrorists attacked and killed several Israeli athletes. Nothing in my mind even comes close to that.

blue

Best: (one of two)
Watching my oldest son score the winning points in a high school basketball game, with the assist from his younger brother.

(two of two)
Watching my two younger sons play on a state championship soccer team.

Worst: Bart Starr's touchdown in the 1967 NFL Championship game.

Mickey mantle

It happened in Little League . . . my dad was coach. He came to me and told me to bunt. I did and he was so proud of me that he bought ice cream cones for the whole team.
And the worst is Mickey Mantle dying way too young.

The Immaculate Reception
The Yankees Win! The Yankees Win! (Pick a year any year- except 1976)
1975 World Series
1976 World Series (Reds sweep the Yankees!)
1986 Masters victory for the Golden Bear
1980 Wimbledon final between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg- best tennis match ever!

Personal:
My first citywide tennis championship
Lettering in 3 sports in high school

Worst:
As said in previous, thoughtful posts:
Roberto Clemente's unexpected death
The 1972 Munich Olympics massacre
Witnessing the death of John McSherry on Opening Day
The entire history of the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Bengals franchises

Best: Lakers 15-1 2001 playoffs (What Bulls)
LA - Portland game 7 of the West in 2000
West coast winning premierships
Melbourne storm winning NFL premiership after two years in the competition
My medal at country champs 2 seasons ago in the hurdles

Worst: Indiana losing to the Bulls in 7 games in 99 (Poor Reggie)
Body failing me

Pablo Escobar being shot for the own goal....

Best: The Seattle Mariners tying the record in 2001 for amount of wins won in a season (It held up for eighty-some years). The best part is that they did it without the benefit of Ken Griffey, Jr. or Alex Rodriguez.

Worst: I agree with Spokanite............after tying the record, not making it past the Yanks to the World Series (Miss you, Tino).
