Bernie Sanders praises pope’s attack on austerity: ‘Money cannot be the God of life’

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders praised Pope Francis over the weekend for his recent condemnation of unbridled capitalism.

While visiting Bolivia last week, Pope Francis accused corporations which exploit cheap labor and resources for profits of pursuing “the dung of the devil.” And he took a shot at governments which enacted austerity measures that cut programs for the poor.

“The new colonialism takes on different faces. At times it appears as the anonymous influence of mammon: corporations, loan agencies, certain ‘free trade’ treaties, and the imposition of measures of ‘austerity’ which always tighten the belt of workers and the poor,” the pope said.

Sanders told CBS host John Dickerson that Pope Francis had highlighted the fact that “casino-type capitalism is causing devastating problems with our climate.”

I seldom agree with Popes, but the New Pope is pretty cool.

Yeah, it's called tithing. As I recall it is part of the Bible and part that conservatives tend to like. Granted they like it as an excuse for why taxes shouldn't be thirty something percent because if ten is good enough for God it's good enough Congress.

I'm not a fan of religion at all, I think a lot of shit can be laid neatly at their doorstep. That said enough people seem to deperately need God as a crutch in their pathetic lives that I wouldn't say they don't provide something of great value. I would just say people are fucking stupid.

The Church is incredibly wealthy. You get that way when you've quite literally been gather wealth in various forms since. . .what? The tail end of the Roman Empire?

The tithe never broke anybody and you know it. That being said I have no intention of defending their stance on birth control or abortion or evolution or sex ed. You can literally look around the world and fairly reliably chart how religious a country is and tie it to teen pregnancy and abortion. There are other factors (poor countries spit out kids too) but if the US (especially broken into states) and the UK are any examples. . .if it's not the cause it's a damn strong correlation.

But ultimately that's all been going on for centuries and will likely carry on at least another few centuries. Ultimately that has relatively little to do with the Pope as an individual however. Certainly no more or less than a president (likely Republican) wanting to tear down social security or raise the retirement age when he has a job for eight years and if he wasn't set for life prior to being president he's set for life now. They aren't really related you know?

t Howard Kurtz alleged a media double standard in the coverage of Democratic upstart Bernie Sanders, whom he said is getting a free pass from the political press corps on old scandals and controversial statements.

“He’s not getting the scrutiny that comes along with being a top-tier candidate,” Kurtz claimed. “Even on his positions of breaking up the banks or single-payer healthcare — we should have a debate about that. Very few go into that.”
