Shakespeare also makes reference to the Beltane and Midsummer celebrations in (you guessed it!) A Midsummer Night's Dream.
There is a book out there called Beltane, but to be perfectly honest I don't know the author and I have not read the book so I can't vouch for its information.
Also, the "spring cleaning" was to be done. We are all aware of tossing out or giving away our old and unused possessions to clear away the spirtual and physical clutter of the last year. (and for those of you that know me...thats why I've been moving my furniture around)
Sacred springs are also visited at this time of year, both to bring offerings to the Goddess, and to recieve purification/healing. A current custom with ancient roots is the tossing of coins into a fountain for luck (and there are a LOT of fountains in Las Vegas!)Offerings of flowers are more common in remote areas but the concept is the same.
This is the time of year we celebrate the return of the sun and the union of opposites. The Dark part of the year has given over to the Light and we observe that one does not exist without the other. We seek the harmony and balance of all things. We will spend this month in reverance of Nature, whether it be hiking in the woods, picnicing in the park, or playing volleyball on the beach. I would urge all of you to spend some time this month in the great outdoors and take the time to marvel at the beauty of our natural world.
"Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence, within you!"
Bright Blessings this Beltane eve to you all!
