Being a kid again

I was around 12(?) when Atari 2600 came out
We brought down the old Amiga 500 from the attic a while back. Still kicking! Monkey Island nostalgia weekend  Not quite as old as the Atari but the old beast still has a few years on her.

I know the membership here skews a little older. But I’m not so far off thirty myself. My bf is eight years older.

We just got back from sledding 😊. It was super fun. But now I’m an icicle. My fingers are throbbing writing this.

What have you done to get in touch with your inner kid recently?

Em
Sledding is so fun! I haven't done that for years. :( Sadly, my inner child had severe separation anxiety issues, which I've worked very hard to put behind me. Still, if the snow is just right, I'll make a snow person and maybe a snow angel, or two, followed by a mug of hot cocoa with far too many mini-marshmallows. And when spring comes around, you'll find me on a woodsy walk, talking to whatever creatures cross my path. Great question, Emily! Hope you've warmed up by now!

That's awesome! There's a big market for retro games now, old Atari and activision games going for decent money.

I remember when we thought, wow, look at those graphics...now from a distance you can't tell if its a movie or a video game.

I’m finding writing a BDSM-themed 750 word story quite warming 😊.

Emily
Hmmm, so other things, besides your fingers, are throbbing now, eh? I get the same feeling when I write erotic short stories, although BDSM isn't my wheelhouse. Will you be sharing when you arrive at The End?

Getting in touch with him? My struggle is more about keeping him in check. :)

Snow is way too cold for my taste, though I admit, sledding is cool... well, on the way down, then you have to get up again. There are fun games that one can play inside where it is warm. Does playing with LEGO count? :) I did that when I was 10 and I do that now still, well past 40.

I think the main defining characteristic of children is their limitless imagination. In that sense, I consider myself lucky, as I never lost the ability to believe in wonders and miracles or to conjure up those wonders right from my own mind if I want to.

Looking around, there was no place to hide. So, we had no choice but to run, and run we did. We ran just like the rascal kids we used to be. When we got far enough, we fell to the lawn and laughed our asses off. All this time, that damn donkey kept braying in a frenzy.

When it finally got quiet, we stood up and composed ourselves. Almost simultaneously, we shook our heads and said, "You'll never change."
Your ASS-es off? :)

I watched the first of the relaunched series of Gladiators.

It's exactly like it was 25 years ago with the camp, the cheering and booing, foam fingers, excess Spandex, and snacking and getting trolleyed with my housemates on a Saturday night. Except for the getting trolleyed bit.

I've never really grown up. I still watch Bugs Bunny, read comic books, build model cars, and play the occasional video game. I'd rather watch the latest mediocre Marvel/DC/Star Wars movie than an Oscar-winning drama. I love spending an afternoon on the floor with my granddaughter, though getting up gets harder and harder.

Getting old is mandatory, and growing up is completely optional. Losing your inner child is the failure of most unhappy people. Children do things that make them happy to the exclusion of all else, but we can't as adults. But we should never lose that passion.

Sorry Em, my inner child died so many years ago that I can no longer tap into him. That’s what age and experience do for you. No point in trying to pretend I’m something I’m not. Although I do eat a fair amount of chocolate despite being diabetic.

This afternoon I'll be playing D&D with the same group I've been playing with every month for the past 30 years. Last week should have been my monthly boardgaming session with my other group (a mere 22 years), but I had to be a grown-up and work instead.

Hi, hun!

Hope you’re OK.

I have a seven year old, despite being in my fifties. I get to build Lego, and play Barbies, and play 'school' (I'm the disruptive kid). I'd say she's keeping me in touch with my inner child.

If anyone has the chance, I highly recommend seeing Alan Cumming is Not Acting His Age , his current one-man show that's touring. Short review at link. It's surprisingly profound but also promotes the idea that growing 'up" is optional compared to growth as a person.

Found myself singing "Great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts..."

I just spent four hours rolling dice and making bad jokes and drinking too much. I feel like I'm 25 again.

Of course how I feel tomorrow is a different matter.

I'm in my mid 40s and I go longboarding with my teenage daughters on most weekends. They actually like cruising and ask me to go with them so they won't get trolled by guys driving by or other skaters.

We just got back from surfing too. 😎
