Before I offend anybody.....

Ok, so i realise that the posts are for getting to know ppl, expressing your opinions etc, and I appreciate that members have views about others, become friends etc.

However, the amount of 'so-and-so is such a bitch/slut/troll/insert your own insult here' that I see as I quietly roam the boards, worries me slightly - I mean the difference between what you think you know about a member, and what you actually know is incredible and it seems that people really take comments to heart.

I am so petrified of offending someone that it is almost a fear to post my real opinions.....

Am i just a freak?!

In fact, I can guarantee you that if you post here with any regularity, then you'll offend someone at some point. You can't try hard enough to succeed in not offending.

If you post only nicey-nicey posts, you'll offend folks who hate them.

If you post only serious, scholarly posts, you'll offend someone who hates them, or you'll offend someone with whom you disagreed.

If you post flirty, flighty posts, you'll either offend someone who thinks that this board isn't the place for flirting, or someone with whom you didn't flirt.

If you post shit-stirring comments, you'll surely offend.

If you try to agree with one side or another in a debate, you'll offend someone on the other side.

If you post that you're afraid of posting, you'll offend someone who can't imagine why a new person would be intimidated in posting on this fine, harmonious, inclusive bastion of free speech.

So, don't sweat it. Just be who you are. At some point, you will get snide comments, if for nothing else than a spelling or grammar error. It's inevitable.

My default rules around here are: be nice in general because there's plenty of bullshit that happens to each of us every day when we go offline; and, being pissy and mean for no real good reason except that it's "the way you are" or "you just felt like pushing a stranger's buttons" is just another excuse for not taking the effort to get along with your fellow human beings.

That's my take on things. I say, post away.

The way I do it: I *try* not to get into the he said/she said stuff. I'm trying to have some fun and unwind here. I suppose I have at some time or another offended someone here with my off-the-wall brand of sarcastic humor. BUT, so far, no one has reached thru the computer and slapped me, yet.

As members of this community we must remember that we all come from very diverse backgrounds. What upsets some people my please others. You just never know. Therefore.. Be yourself. Unless yourself is someone that sets out to hurt people.
