before getting an editor's help

ok, so I'm almost finished a story (which I want to post here), but I know it's going to need a lot of work. and I know I'm not really the best person at proof reading my work (as in all those essays I wrote in school never got proof read, beyond basic spelling), so I would like some advice on what I should look for before I ask for help, so I can make it easier to read, fix, and such.
also, any advice on how to detach myself from it? I kinda know it by heart and have a habit of not noticing even others' glaring grammar errors.
