As we are about to move into our new home, I'm looking for ideas how to decorate a bedroom in a way that hmm...doesn't make you feel like the room's whole purpose would be to store the clothes somewhere.

I don't want to scare guests or raise unnecessary lifestyle questions, but yet, it should radiate the fact that this room is for...adults. Any ideas?

The floor is walnut, the wall behind the headboard a dark ruby red, the other walls and ceiling white.

(Should I worry that I picked the same color for my home office as CM did for her kitchen?)

Good luck with the decorating. We have finally taken on renovating our bedroom. It has been planned since we moved in, but time was never available to tackle such a huge project, so we spent a long time in a room that looked less like a bedroom, more like a dungeon (concrete walls, floor etc.)..which wasn't all bad, but is time for a makeover. Our original ideas have changed as well....was to be red, white and black, now is becoming white with black beams and window frames and door with the red added in soft furnishings, artwork, etc. As has always been, there will likely be crops and floggers hung from the metal bedframe (or perhaps the wall), as well as our other fun gear stored in the usual cupboard and drawers. LOL, interesting thing has been on climbing the ladders to reach the 13 ft ceiling, we have discovered hooks discreetly placed along the beams in various locations...maybe we aren't the first kinky peeps to enjoy the space.:cattail:

You painted your home office "aqua chiffon"??

Artwork could be used to ramp up the "adultness" of the bedroom - tastefully matted/framed B&W nudes, works by whatever artists you prefer, etc. Candles, the right fabrics...

If your room is big enough, putting in a sitting area can make the room more of a retreat then just a place to sleep. Like CM said, artwork will make it look more like a place for adults. I like the colors you've chosen, that's how most of my house is decorated - I think they're really rich, beautiful colors. Unfortunately, my room is tiny and barely fits the necessities.

I can suggest a couple of free standing floor mirrors tastefully placed in the room.

Also, I'm a big fan of Jack Vettriano's work. And his palette choice would work well with the colour scheme you've described. But as CutieMouse has pointed out, any 'adult' art you enjoy is good for emphasising the nature of the room.

You could 'artfully' arrange some of the more innocent looking toys on your bedside table... or perhaps as a workable wall sculpture :D

I guess some dimmed red lightning always conveys some erotic mood.

This is the bed I have always wanted.

When we were looking for our first apartment, we walked into one bedroom where the floggers were hung on the wooden bedframe. We pointed them out to each other, and rented it immediately.

We were profoundly disappointed when we moved in and they were gone. . . It took us quite a while to realize what was missing. :)

We haven't gotten around to it in our new place yet, but when the wife and I were in our last place, we had a hook attached to our ceiling. I'm sure you can guess our favored use for it. It was sturdy enough to imply some things about what we did with it to those who would understand, and depending on where you place it you can always hang a plant from it to put it into stealth mode ;)
