KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An American climber who fulfilled his dream of climbing the highest mountains on each of the seven continents by reaching the summit of Mount Everest died of probable altitude sickness on the way down, mountaineering officials said Friday.

Don Cash became ill at the summit and was treated there by his two Sherpa guides, one of the officials said.

“He got high altitude sickness on top of Everest,” said Pasang Tenje Sherpa, head of Pioneer Adventure, which provided the guides.

“When he was on the top he just fell. The two Sherpas who were with him gave CPR and massages,” he said. “After that he woke up, then near Hillary Step he fell down again in the same manner, which means he got high altitude sickness.”

Hillary Step is a rocky outcrop near the summit named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who was the first person to climb the mountain along with the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

Altitude sickness is caused by low amounts of oxygen at high elevation and can cause headaches, vomiting, shortness of breath and mental confusion.

Cash, 55, from Utah, had a long-held dream to climb the “seven summits"...

A lot of the rich idiots paying lots of $$$ to be hauled to the top of Everest are risking their lives so they can go to the next cocktail party or sales meeting and be able to say, "I climbed Everest."

It really is colossally stupid. Their Darwin Awards are deserved.

Nepal Says Overcrowding Not The Sole Issue As Everest Death Toll Reaches Nine

May 26 (UPI) -- Nepal's government denied recent statements solely attributing the increase of deaths on Mount Everest to overcrowding on the mountain. Dandu Raj Ghimire, director general of Nepal's tourism authority, said other factors, including poor weather conditions, have contributed to the nine reported deaths on the mountain. Ghimire said 381 people had climbed the mountain this spring, but a lack of clear weather has lead to a "higher than expected" number of people on the routes.

British climber Robin Haynes Fisher, who became the latest victim when he died of apparent altitude sickness on Saturday, cited the crowds as potentially fatal in an Instagram post before his ascent.

"With a single route to the summit, delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal so I am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. Unless of course everyone else plays the same waiting game," Fisher wrote.

Crowds of climbers were stuck in a line to the summit of the mountain where most people can only spend a few minutes without extra oxygen. Mountain guide Adrian Ballinger told CNN that the poor weather led to fewer climbing days and exacerbated problems for less experienced climbers.

"These deaths were entirely preventable," he said. "And they were due to this lack of judgment on a difficult season with difficult weather."

Colorado Climber Dies After Reaching Top Of Mt. Everest

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado climber has died shortly after getting to the top of Mount Everest and achieving his dream of scaling the highest peaks on the seven continents.

Christopher Kulish, a 62-year-old Boulder attorney, died Monday at a camp below the summit during his descent. The cause isn’t yet known.

His brother, Mark Kulish of Denver, says Christopher Kulish had just reached the top of Everest with a small group after crowds of hundreds of climbers congested the 29,035-foot (8,850-meter) peak last week.

About half a dozen climbers died on Everest last week, including Don Cash of Utah. Most of them died while descending from the summit during only a few windows of good weather each May.

Kulish also is survived by his mother, Betty Kulish, and a sister, Claudia.

UK Climber Falls To His Death From Matterhorn In Switzerland

GENEVA (AP) — Police in southwestern Switzerland say a 24-year-old British mountain climber who was coming down from the country’s famed Matterhorn fell to his death in pre-dawn darkness, after a chunk of rock came loose during the descent.

The Valais regional police say two other Britons who were also coming down from the Hoernli ridge were uninjured. It happened around 2:40 a.m. Monday at an altitude of around 3,380 meters (more than 11,000 feet).

The victim wasn’t identified, and local prosecutors were investigating.

Valais police spokesman Steve Leger said he had no details about why the climbers had been scaling the peak at that hour...

Peregrinator's obituary was the first I learned that there is a peak named after him. Wondrously fitting for this fascinating fellow.
