"Because it's there."

Why?

Oh - and what do you think of people who get lost/trapped on a mountainside and we spend thousands of $$$ in search and rescue to get them down? Shouldn't THEY have to pay for that? I mean - why should I have to pay for some - um - idiot (ok - silly person) who wants to just go out and climb around?

Not all people who get lost are idiots.. sometimes shit happens.. weather in Alaska is unpredictable..and you can't always go by the forecast.. best thing is to be prepared for when it happens.. and that is a survival kit. If you don't know what your doing.. or know what to do when you get lost.. then don't go.. best advice ever to give is "Stay Calm". If you panic everything you learned goes out the door. Some of the most expierenced Hikers, campers etc.. have gotton lost or hurt.. and didn't do what they were taught... they paniced.. causing them to do things like leave their pack, start shedding their clothes.. by the time they are found by search and rescue.. they are starving, freezing and in piss poor shape.. when they get back to town and are recovered.. People ask them what happened.. " and they responded with " I paniced" So basicly is Stay calm.. have a survival kit.. and now adays you can by or rent a locator device.. if something happens..you push a button and it sends out an emegancy signal and your location.
Also keep in mind not all search and rescue has to cost thousands of dollars.. We have a Volunteer search and rescue team up here...

Hello, Alexandra. Might I suggest that, although your post is correct and contains good information, you take a look at the date of the one to which you're replying?

Damn, I thought I could just pack a SPOT beacon and feel safe. Poo. I'll just keep the extra gear in the pack even though it's heavier.
