"Because it's there."

Perhaps the world's toughest 5km race, up a 3022 ft high mountain and back...

... (Note bare chests, wet t-shirts and a bit of carnage)

Cool.

Even as a kid, I was very careful about running down mountainsides. I'm willing to bet that has something to do with the fact that I'm still running at my age. I don't like seeing men running around in public without shirts; it's bad form and I find it offensive. The beach is one thing; anywhere else is inconsiderate.

Mom used to slide down the snow chute on Marathon. She recommended pants for the round-trip. The shale at the bottom of the snow chute is sharp. She never made a recommendation about what top to wear.

wow

I wonder how many ankle sprains they get scrambling down those slopes

I would love to try that

So strap on the leather and git!

sounds...I don't know...kinda bondage-ish, when you put it like that

all the more appealing

any idea what kind of training would you need to run that sort of event? I swim. In fact, I swim a lot, but that's pretty much it for athletics, and I know virtually nothing about real training.

Swimming IS real training. It's probably given you a great aerobic base.

If you wanted to be competitive, I'd say running a lot of hills and plenty of time under the weight pile, emphasizing squats and lunges, would probably be the way to go. Stretching to keep the knees and ankles safer. It's a relatively short race in terms of miles, 3.5 or something, so interval training (sprints and the like) would also be a good idea.

I'm guessing, though; I've never trained with any science for anything but marathons. I mostly get in shape by doing the thing, whether it's climbing or carrying a rucksack or whatever.

That's awesome. What's the elevation gain?

Sea level start.

One of the biggest problems is how to keep broken rock bits out of your shoes. I think cuts are most prevalent injury. The trail is open all the time. Come on up. This is posted at the base of the chute:

And BTW, here's a photo of Holly and Kikkan (women's runner up and winner, respectively) near the top of the course.

The words of great climber George Leigh Mallory, asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Mt Everest. perhaps the most famous quote ever on climbing, and certainly the one that gets the most play among non-climbers.

In this thread, I will attempt to answer your questions about the craft of moving on technically challenging terrain in the mountains. Rock, Ice, Snow, Altitude...what do you want to know?

I started rock climbing a little over ten years ago, actually the week of the Oklahoma City bombing, by taking four days of lessons with other litsters and great friends atmas and HungryJoe. I started ice climbing maybe a year or two later, and I've been hiking all my life; I've climbed some technical snow and some high stuff. I certainly don't know it all, but I like it, and I like to talk about it.

Ask away.

But Mallory had some other great quotes!

* nods in self-agreement *

Mallory: What are you talking about, "variety"? Hostages? You wanna fuck some other women now? Is that what you're talking about, Mickey?

I love the knickers. They came back into vogue a few years ago. I have a couple pairs, one cotton and one tech, and they're great. But boy, do they look silly on Clint.

Jumping over, looks easy.......

Jumping back, not so easy.
Fun, though. Where is that again? 've seen pics of it before.
Vern Tejas summits Denali 50 times!

story
Holy shit. Talk about persistence.

Vern Tejas is known for playing his fiddle while guiding mountain trips. Here he plays at Base Camp Mount Vinson in Antarctica.

Nepal to re-measure Mount Everest to end China row

"He said stations will be set up at three different locations using the global positioning system, and the task of measuring the peak would take two years."

Wtf?
