I have an idea in my head about time travel, centering around an old pickup truck. When did the VIN system begin?

For any car manufactured after 1969 the VIN is on the drivers side of the car, visible through the windshield.

Before VIN vehicles had engine numbers and body numbers. I have no clue what the distinction is tween VIN and body, because both serve the same purpose.

So, if someone peeked at the windshield of a mid-60's truck, he could see the VIN or something resembling a VIN?

Prolly could. I recall that my 64 Mustang had a VIN mounted by the window.

As long as I don't post that link in the story, I should be okay.
