There is good news in the medical community today.

It was announced this morning that Senator Jeffords would be splitting with the GOP to become an independent.

Doctors are baffled, but pleased, with this developement. They can't explain the sudden change but equated it with a person in a coma. Sometimes patients never come out of it and sometimes they do. Some after a few days or many years. Little is understood about the mechanisms involved, so many professionals just chalk it up to divine intervention. A "miracle" some say.

It is just good to know that mental illnes isn't always a life sentence.

Noted political pundit and GOP hack Rush Limbaugh says it is the smog. More precisely the lack thereof.

"This is what happens when the clean air wackos have their way. Pretty soon more people will breathe clean air and will stop listening to me and start thinking for themselves. No doubt this is what happened to Jeffords." Mr Limbaugh stated in a press release this morning.

It was rumored that a Catholic priest had spent some time with Jeffords before his conversion...

A bootleg tape of the meeting has been delivered to our studios....we can't verify the authenticity of the recording but we believe it to be a true account of the moment Jeffords made his decision..

*hiss of audio tape with muffled voices*

Priest: Heavenly Father we beseech you to have mercy on our poor afflicted brother.

Jeffords: Never! He will not listen to you! He hates you bleeding heart liberals! HAHAHAHAHA All your concern for children and whales....

Priest: OUT! In the name of the Father and the trees I command thee! OUT! Thou demon from hell..release your hold on this poor man and take your profit mongering hordes with you!

Jeffords: NEVER! HAHAHAHAHAHA.....uh oh. Is that...Oh please no....IT'S RALPH!!! Fuckit....I'm outta here....

*tape ends*

That is all we have...we believe Sen. Jeffords may have been referring to Ralph Nader but we cannot be certain.

Now for the weather....It will be sunny with rain in some places. Sunblock 3000 is recommended for travel to the Antarctica....

Ah Party defectors. Democrats are very familiar with them.

Members of Congress who have changed political parties since the 1950s. In the past 20 years, 14 Democrats have switched to the Republican Party, while only one Republican has become a Democrat.

Democrats to the GOP:

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (news - bio - voting record) of Colorado, in 1995.

Sen. Richard Shelby (news - bio - voting record) of Alabama, in 1994.

Sen. Phil Gramm (news - bio - voting record) of Texas, in 1983. He joined the GOP while in the House. He was re-elected to the House and then to the Senate.

Sen. Strom Thurmond (news - bio - voting record) of South Carolina, in 1964.

Rep. Virgil Goode (news - bio - voting record) of Virginia, in 2000. He first changed to be independent. Later he switched to the Republican Party.

Rep. Nathan Deal (news - bio - voting record) of Georgia, in 1995.

Rep. Greg Laughlin of Texas, in 1995. In the following election, he lost in the primary.

Rep. Billy Tauzin of Louisiana, in 1995.

Democrat to Independent:

Sen. Harry Byrd Jr. of Virginia, in 1971.

Republican to Democrat:

Rep. Michael Forbes of New York, in 1999. He lost re-election in 2000.

Sen. Wayne Morse of Oregon, in 1952, switched to become an independent. In 1955, he switched to the Democratic Party.

Switch back:

Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire, became independent in 1999 during a failed run for the presidency. He returned to the Republican Party and was re-elected to the Senate in 2000.

What took him so long?

Senator Jeffords

He was the sole Republican in the House to oppose President Reagan's 1981 tax cut.

He was the first Republican in the Senate to oppose convicting President Clinton on House impeachment charges.

He voted against the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

He condemned News Gingrich's "Contract With America" in 1994, saying it represented only the religious right of the south.
