I don't know what the appeal is.....just a turn on. I had a couple of experiences in a bookstore about 15 years ago and one of them was with a larger guy and it was a lot of fun.....guess that's where it comes from. I don't think there is one definition of "bear". Sometimes it seems like a term for stocky or heavy, sometimes older, sometimes hairy, sometimes facial hair, and on and on... They actually have a bear code that has all these variations:

I personally am not attracted by weight. I don't care for really skinny nor obese. On the other hand, body hair turns me on a great deal as does muscle -- not to the point of chemicals.

I once went a couple of times to some bear meetings just to see what it was like. Though several of the guys turned me on physically, there was just nothing in common. My experiences cannot count for all bear organizations, but at least the common theme in this was typically older, blue collar, and some facial hair.

I am very fortunate in that my partner of 6+ years is very much my physical type. In my past, I normally "saw" guys that interested me and got it on. Many of them were ok people, but just nothing in common to have any level of involvement beyond the sex. With my partner, we only chatted online for about 3 months. His pic wasn't very flattering. Likewise, when he said he was hairy, I was thinking that maybe he "envisioned" himself that way as many guys think they are hairy because they see all that peach fuzz when they turn a light on. Anyway, I just enjoyed the chats, but never expect him to be my type when we met in person... Well, when he finally came to meet, I remember opening the door. I was speechless as he was very much my type. I must say that neither one of us are in our prime.
