I just finished a story and felt like I had written many of the same words over and again.

Admittedly, have read many authors with a much larger vocabulary than mine, but specifically, could we talk about some synonyms for BDSM type activities, emotions, descriptions etc?

I imagine I am not the only one who struggles with using words too often.

Some examples:

Strike or stroke
body parts
pain
cum

flogger
anything to do with punishment scenes
power
power exchange

and on and on and on.......

Thanks all!

just a few

hiya MissT! i feel your pain. i tried and failed to provide some on the fly for ya, but another good suggestion is to actually talk through the scene by actions like "he brought his hand down on my bare flesh" rather than the name for the action like "he spanked me"

Instead of synonyms, I think it's just important to keep the words around the basic words interesting. While there might not be many different words I can use to describe pain, you can describe it differently..."The hot flash of light in front of my eyes as my body felt the delicious pain" or something along those lines. See what I mean?

As I think of synonyms I'll be back here, though. Promise.

Synonyms....

Strike or stroke: lash, decorate, engrave, paint, emblazon, mark, kiss, singe. slash, beat

pain: agony, fire, torment, electricity, burn

I'm sure I can think of more later.

I don't have any help but your post gives me even more respect for what you writers do.

Another technique that'll keep the same old words sounding fresh is recombining them, giving emotions to inanimate things, or changing parts of speech. Like, um...

Her despairing bottom
His forebodingly silent whip

Oh darn, I have to go teach. Maybe I'll think of some better examples when I have more time.

Feels all sorry for the despairing bottom. Maybe a good spanking will cheer it up? :p

Actually, I think I go with NemoAlia's suggestion in my own writing. I don't worry too much about overusing the same word -- I just try to vary the sentences around it to avoid it sounding stale.

I think it's when I read the same phrase over and over, rather than just the same word, that I notice it and it annoys me.

Of course, in poetry, I evoid repetition (unless it's deliberately for effect). But prose is a little less constrained.

Thanks, everyone.

Those are some great ideas.

Oh and daedalus? Thank you. I write erotic stories as a hobby and for amusement. So, I suppose I don't put as much effort into them as I could, but I am sure my mom would be a bit surprised to find out that all those years in college adn I am stressing over how to describe flogging!

:D

Keep the ideas rolling~

exposing yourself to the genra to incrase vocabulary

i try to learn the 'language' needed by spending time in that situation.............the internet is fantastic for that as its all written.......so, my suggestion is to hang in some BDSM chat room and be exposed to the current vocabulary
i write in a Gorean litterary fashion so-to-speak so i spend time in some Gor homestones both as a slave as well as a Free to learn both vocabularies

The rule I was taught was the more esoteric and exotic the word the less you should repeat it, so even if you do create a list of synonyms they won't last you long. The use of creative noun adjective, verb adverb etc. parings was the way round the problem that was suggested to us.
