Okay, is it just me or does it seem that one has to have a great and open sense of humor to be involved in bdsm?

I'm sure it helps in any relationship but having an ability to giggle at yourself seems like it would be invaluable here.

Growing up humor was a survival skill. If you could make them laugh, the rage would dissipate end they'd stop whatever they were doing that you were afraid would kill you. Hey, now that is a philsophy I totally agree with! I don't think that being able to laugh at oneself is indicative of any sort of self-loathing or any other kind of psychological mumbo-jumbo, despite what some experts may think.

I can think of a few times in scene where I've had to stop to get the chuckles out of me.
