I understand the draw of BD, but I cannot understand the draw of SM. Can someone explain why inflicting pain for no apparent reason would make the giver or the reciever, feel good?

It isn't so much "inflicting pain for no apparent reason". There are many types of "pain" that can be a sexual pleasure (ie. being spanked, wearing clamps on the nipples, etc.). Granted some people are extreme Sadists and masochists, the majority in the BDSM lifestyle are not.

I can only speak for myself, and to answer your very specific (and limited) question on the pain aspect of BDSM: I like pain. It heightens your senses. It stimulates sex trance. That I do. I am fully involved in the lifestyle. In fact, March 30th will be my official collaring date with my Dom. Like I mentioned to LordMagicMan, not every Sadist and masochist is in the extremes. I, too, like pain, but I still have my limits like any self respecting sub would.
