Bailout List: Banks, Auto Companies, and More

http://projects.propublica.org/bailout/list

The U.S. Gov’t paints a much rosier picture.

Tracking where taxpayer money has gone in the ongoing bailout of the financial system. Our database accounts for both the broader $700 billion bill and the separate bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (go here for the Federal Reserve’s emergency loans to banks).

This would have been very topical 2 years ago

It's good to remind people as to why they no longer seem to live in a land of opportunity since we, and are children, and grandchildren, will be paying off this debt for some time to come.

:( Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

Isn't what we didn't get back interesting?? And we're still passing the swag around.

Small potatoes. ARRA was a much bigger boondoggle. Not that any boondoggle is good; but we lost half a trillion to the banks over the past 3 years. We lose that much every year to defense contractors.

Eventually it adds up to some real money, eh?

The banks get it or the defense contractors get it. Either way, the most us mere mortals can hope for is to pick up a few scraps here and there. That's the way it is, that's the way it has always been, and that's the way it will always be.

I see, a follower of the Zero-sum...

;) ;)

Why did you pick on the military when it is the entitlement that soaks up all available Capital with zero ROI?

I'm not picking on the military. I think we need a strong defense. Unfortunately, we have a corporate welfare system where the government props up companies who do nothing but sell things the to the government, that the government doesn't need.

We don't have a strong defense, we have a strong offense. The reason for that is because the defense contractors own the pentagon, and who could possibly vote against a strong defense? Do you see the problem? ;)

I support need based entitlements. We live in a society and part of living in a society means we take care of those among us who cannot take care of themselves. That's the world I want to live in anyway. I realize not everyone shares my compassion for their fellow man.

We have a Scientific-Educational complex too, but you didn't include that...

Always just the military...

I heard about a disabled vet yesterday who was denied a knee replacement because he was too young; a knee lasts only ten years and they didn't want to have to do it twice.

I do not.

One entitlement leads to the next.

Entitlement leads to competition for entitlement.

Then you end up bitterly divided and broke with no chance of divorce, only murder.

I don't know what you mean by Scientific Educational complex. Are you talking about NIH? I'd shut it down. It's not the role of the Federal government to do basic research. Especially considering the tax payer invests the money to do the research, then all the researchers go start a company using that research they got for free, and make millions. And consider where I live; I drive past these 'start ups' every day.

Well, that's unfortunate.

If you're going to have an entitlement state, then every group wants its own special entitlement and if you don't give one to "Science," then you are a flat-earther...

:(

Well, that's unfortunate.

What's unfortunate is that some people will willingly abdicate their charitable contributions by allowing the government to run rampant through its enemies looting and plundering in order to reward its voting block.

'later dude...

What are you going on about? I said that we, as a society, have an obligation to take care of those among us who cannot take care of themselves. That's an 'entitlement state'?

I'd call it, basic humanity.
