bah @ out of control story

I wouldnt even class myself as an author, but this is probably the best place to rant.

I've got many thousands of words written down already, in 11 large word documents. (Having just done a word count in each of them with some quicl mental mathematics, I've got 62,000)

Basically its a grand Porno Sci-Fi Space Opera following one guy which starts in his early teens and ends up when he's exceedingly old and grey (but with enormous timeline gaps)

Any ideas on how to reign it in, even a little?

I am not the person to ask...so why I'm answering, I don't know. ;-) I am working on a story that currently masses 100K words, and will end up at least twice as long as that. It's a sequel to another story of 115K words. If you're a novelist by nature, why fight it? I gave up the struggle long ago. Luckily I am a very fast typist.

That said, you might look for subplots and deviations that you can cut out of the main story, but any birth-to-death tale is bound to be long unless you keep it extraordinarily simple. Porno sci-fi space opera doesn't sound simple to me.

Too many years (compared to my age) of watching Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5 and reading 200AD (Judge Dredd et al). It all adds up into big, galaxy spanning adventures *sigh*

at least my 62k pales in comparison to a grand total of 215k plus But then again, i've only written three proper stories
