At 22 Seth Baker felt like he had life by the tail. With his athletic physique and shaggy blonde hair he had always done well with the ladies and now he had the education to make all his dreams come true.
Against all odds he'd managed to rise from his working class roots and be awarded a full scholarship to one of the most elite universities in the country and graduated near the top of his class. After graduation he couldn't wait to get as far away from his entitled classmates as he could. With few exceptions they all seemed to believe it was their effort and not their parents wealth that had placed them at the top of the food chain. Their hubris had been useful though and Seth was more than happy to take advantage of it whenever the need arose. One of the few exceptions was Seth's best friend Scott. Though a year behind him, Scott was one of the few people Seth had truly developed a relationship with.
Through the years Seth would take every opportunity he could to go stay with Scott while on break from school. Scott's well adjusted, upper class family was a welcome respite from his father's drunken rages he'd have to endure while at home. Seth had hoped getting through school and making something of himself would somehow put an end to the stream of abuse but it just seemed to make it worse. Everything was on track to put it all behind him though until on one of those visits with Scott he got the call. At first he thought it had to be some prank. He'd just spoken to his mother the day before and there was no indication of any problems at home. His head spun as he hung up the phone then opened up his browser and started in disbelief at the headline from his hometown news site.
Welford Couple Dead After Apparent Murder Suicide
"Scott!" he screamed out from the guest room.
Sensing the urgency in his voice Scott raced in to find Seth sitting on the bed staring blankly at his phone trembling. "What's going on?" he asked walking over to sit next to him.
Seth silently passed him his phone as tears began to stream down his face. Stunned at what he saw Scott wrapped an arm around Seth's shoulder and pulled him to him. "Don't worry man. I've got you. You can stay with us as long as you need to."
"Thanks." Seth said softly through the tears.
They sat there for the next hour in silence. Neither of them able to utter another word. When Seth seemed to have calmed some Scott broke the silence. "I'm gonna let my mom know you'll be staying a while." he said with a pat on Seth's shoulder before getting up and leaving the room.
The next day Scott and Seth made the 120 mile drive back to Welford where they met with his uncle about arrangements.
"I'll take care of everything Seth." His uncle said still stunned himself. "And when I can get to them I can have your things sent to you."
"Thanks, that'd be great." Seth said relieved. As they got into the car to head back, Seth resolved to never set foot in Welford again. "Not for the funeral, not for any of it." he thought to himself as he mentally closed the door on his past for good.
