Out of curiousity, how did you tell him? I ask because I was set up a few months back and the guy was good looking but absolutely reeked of b.o. And I'm not talking about the kind of "just woke up and haven't showered yet" or "I just spent the last two hours at the gym" kind of thing that we all get every now and then but some people just take no pride or interest in their hygeine or health.
Some people just reak for no reason other than being not aware or caring about it.
You dont have to buy a $400 bottle of cologne... just fuckin' shower...

I have had somewhat similar experiences 2 times in the past. 1st time was last winter, met a guy while out for coffee. We had chatted once or twice on a popular dating site. He had the worst breath and bo. And he thought he was wayyyyyyyyyy too good for me! 2nd time was a guy a friend set me up with. He just had a general funky, but not strong odor about him. He was also really hairy, so I had no desire to get anywhere near his junk.

Yeah thats why you always meet in a public place first...and always have an "exit plan" like telling a friend to call you 5 minutes into it, so that if things are bad you can say a friend called with an emergency and you have to go
