I recently downloaded some .avi files, but I can't view them with Windows Media Player, does anyone know of any progs that I can use for viewing them?

Thanks:)

Thanks for replying!

We had it but it caused problems with our comp, our burning program (to be specific) so, unfortunately no. I could have sworn that I was able to on WMP, but then again, that was ME, now I'm using XP.

I have Win 98SE with WMP 7.01 and that's the program that is associated with .AVI files. The version of Windows shouldn't make a difference and any version of WMP later than 7.01 should play AVI files.

WMP took over the file associations for the file types it can play when I installed it.

AVI is one of the oldest movie formats, so Realplayer, Quicktime, and most other video players should be able to display AVI files.

Check the help menu in WMP for how to re-associate avi files, and/or AVI files in general.

I guess it partially depends on what you mean by can't play
them. If you mean that WMP tries to open the file but it
won't play, then the file may be corrupted somehow or you
may need additional codecs. If you mean that when you click
on the avi file, WMP doesn't start, you may need to check
your file associations. You can check your associations by
opening windows explorer and going to Tools > Folder Options
> File Types. There, you can scroll down to the avi extension
and check what program is supposed to be playing those
files.

Sorry for being long winded, if you need more info, send me
email and I'll try to help.

Good luck!

Thank you all very much! The specific error message is "Error downloading codec". I did check file associations, and file types within the media player. How would I get the additional codecs for WMP? I already have the latest version... grr...

Also, I tried QuickTime (we already have it). It was more of a mess than WMP was.... with WMP, I could hear the sound, no prob, btu not see the images, with QT the sound was garbled, and once again, no image. It might be the file, as was suggested, I'll try another one once it comes in, but in the meantime, if you guys have any more answers...?

Thanks again,

Bel

I had that problem too. I'm no guru, but it's possible the file is corrupted in the video portion (if you can still hear the audio that is).

I once downoladed 100M for a Family Guy episode. It would only playback the audio, giving me the same error message. On a dial-up connection no less! Grrrr!

I use VirtualDub sometimes. It'll play what it can of a corrupted file usually. (Just my 2 cents)

Hi Belilica
How is it messing up your cd burner? I'm having trouble with mine freezing up so I've stopped using it. Trying to remember if I downloaded realplayer about that time:confused:

Well, not my burner, but the program that came with the burner. The comp used to freeze every time we tried to burn something, and the prolem was gone after we got rid of RealPlayer. Try uninstalling it, see if there are any problems after.

If you go to www.divx.com and download the latest codec (I think it also ships with a player as well, although you don't need the player) you should be fine and off and running.
