Hey, I guess I need an avatar. My time gets taken up for a couple of months with a little princess and the next thing I know, I come back and everybody has avatars. I'm sure I missed the excitment and threads all about it, so if someone can either steer me in the right direction or link me to the right thread (or make it easy for me and post some for me to choose from ) I'd appreciate it.

Take what you like the most, find a pic of it, and either save it to your comp from a web site, or scan it in, and use that.

Check the how to forum. There have been several threads in the last month asking wuastions about avatars. All the alnsewers and links you could want are there.

you could also look up avatars on Google, just type in "Fantasy portraits," you'll get a lot of stuff from Baldur's Gate (thanks LMM), or type in "Fantasy Avatar." I don't know what you're looking for exactly, but I'd be more than happy to help you find one, or maybe fifty of them.
