I like to see bits and pieces (or even the whole shebang) in AVs. As a personal preference, I like some part (or whole) of the face best. Art work is pretty and I enjoy it, but I am typically more drawn to posters who show a bit of themselves at one point or another. There are exceptions to that statement, of course.

I'm sure in many cases it is an artificial intimacy I feel, but for me it puts a face/eyes/smile/whatever on a poster, making them a person, instead of just a faceless opinion.

We may be able to convey just through words but our AV's are our "faces" here. Something to be recognsed by, something else to be creative with

I get that, but I see avatars as more personal, naught so much to do with writing but the face(s) we present, just as in RL. I've had AV pics of Venice, and lately Yorkshire, cos I love those places.

I use my face cos people like to see it (I was originally asked to post a pic of myself). As for body parts I've posted photos of my breasts (only one at a time) but generally tried to make it a bit 'arty', using colours, background. I wouldn't post a 'normal' shot of my tits, that would be too personal. I've used photos of my legs cos they're good legs (hahaha) but there too I doctored them w/colour and background. It's just fun for me.

At times I've used photos of fave women (Garbo, Callas, Akhmatova).

All of these say some little thing about me, but if anyone really wants to know me they'll need to "talk" to me for a good length of time and then meet me. Even all the posts I've written don't give anyone a whole 'picture'.

Didn't expect to say this much but, whatever.

I'm usually very happy to see whatever it is that people reveal of themselves either through images of their bodies, their art, their holiday snaps. I think av's are like P says just a glimpse of someone or their mood or interest at a particular time. I've been moved by the lovely Ms Vella's av's lately, gotten a buzz out of cantdog and the young folk, loved P's Yorkshire pics, giggled over the gosling, smiled at Tatelous grinning dimples, admired EnglishLady's cleavage etc, etc...body parts are fine but I love faces -- the many moods of rhino come to mind.

Mind you, I think the penis of the adult male homo sapiens is just about the most fabulous flesh-and-blood object on earth. But it's not always easy to talk to one. In a forum where topics of discussion range from Tennyson to what the cat threw up, a stranger's penis can be an intimidating partner in conversation. It stares at you with that narrowed eye, as if skeptical.

Faces can be nice to talk to; if they happen to be your own, they indicate an enviable devil-may-care attitude toward local law enforcement and/or discovery by your boss, your minister, or my mother. For those of us who'd rather not be recognized if Uncle Bob happens upon Literotica, I enjoy AVs that hint at the owner's personality, whether playfully, teasingly, or in the case of Perdita's travel pix, in a way that lets us glimpse the life behind the words.

I also enjoy nicely done erotic AVs - of which vella's/Lucky's are a perfect example - that communicate more than the sum of the parts.

When conversing with genitalia, without benefit of a formal introduction, I prefer a a half-monty in three-quarters shadow to a floodlit close-up of the main event. If your erect penis is the best way to illustrate how impressed you were with the Tower of Pisa over the holidays, bring it on.

I was complimented recently when a reader send me an email and thought that my memberpage and AV were taken from lingerie ads. It boosted my confidence a bit.

Liar was the artist with my memberpage picture and is probably my most favorite of all AV's.

I think AV's are given a lot of thought from each one of us on Lit and they are an expression of ourselves...Love them, all of them.

That's one of the reasons the penis evolved the other parts: so it could hear. I suspect we've all known a man or two whose primary function was to locate, collect data upon, and make contact with potential dates for their penises?

I once began a sci-fi thread in the Sexual Roleplay forum called, "Trapped On The Planet Of Men Who Think With Their Penises," about a race of sentient pricks whose bodies were, more or less, personal valets and transportation systems. No sooner had I posted it than the young man who was to be my writing partner turned out to be startlingly young, and hoping to lose his virginity the coming weekend, which made me feel motherly toward him and killed my will to go on.

On a slightly more serious note, I chose this AV because it matched the nametag. No more thought put into it than that. I keep it because the one time I changed it drew criticism. I apparently picked the cutest alpaca/llama pic the first time out.
