Avast Ye!

Jack could tell the wound was not immediately life threatening, but it would kill him if he left in untreated. He groaned and forced himself to roll over and observe what was happening around him. He saw the man and Sabre square off, saw him mutter some words to her before attacking her. He tried to stand to help her but couldn't muster the strength. He saw his pistol lying a few feet away and tried to pull himself to it. It was clear the man didn't want anything to do with him... his target was Sabre. Still He had to try and help..

Sabre's eyes twitched in anger. They wouldn't stop accosting her until she returned to Morocco? Very well then, she would eviscerate every single one they sent after her!

The man turned around holding her sabre off, then deflected it away hitting it with one of his blades, attacking with the other. Sabre parried with her tonfa, and an exchange of blows followed where Sabre parried each of the attacks, until she used her tonfa to let one of the assassin's attacks slide along its smooth metal. What the man didn't account for was that a tonfa could be used to attack at the same time one parried, and as the assassin's blade slid along it, she dashed into the opening and smashed the tonfa's shorter end against his nose, then pulled back and hit his face cross-ways.

The man staggered back and Sabre thrusted with her blade at the same time she kept his left blade away from her and out of any possibility of harming her. At the same time the man parried her attack, he pushed harder, trying to force her tonfa down. But that couldn't work against Sabre. Not when she still had her legs free and in perfect condition.

She drew back her tonfa a few inches all of a sudden then hit his blade away. With her own blade she forced his one weapon remaining close enough down, and stepped into him drawing her tonfa down... then yanked it upwards, hitting the man's inch in a strange upper-cut maneuver with the long end of her tonfa. The iron bar smashed brutally against his jaw, a sickening CRUNCH sound reverberating into the black tonfa.

With all his concentration gone, the man's guard fell altogether and Sabre's blade finally found an opening. With a savage snarl, she plunged it into the center of his chest.

"Unnngh!" The man's staggering stopped, and he looked down with utter surprise reflected in his wide open eyes. Sabre pulled her blade away, then drew it back for a beheading slash, but the man let himself fall down onto his back and rolled away. His blad stained the wooden deck of the ship.

<Y-you... you damn whore! Y... you will pay for this!>

Jack watched the whole thing, fading in and out of conciousness. He smiled as Sabre defeated the man. She was good. There was no arguing that. He looked down at his wound. Well... I've had a good couple of last days anyway, he thought with a chuckle that sent pain reverberating up his side. He sighed, wondering if this was when his luck finally ran out. He groaned loudly and felt himself once again slip into unconciousness.

The groan broke Sabre's concentration, who turned to look at Jack. The man noticed and quickly jumped up onto the stern.

<This won't be the last time we meet, Sabre! We will not stop at anything to bring you back, no matter the cost!>

The man's enraged voice disappeared together with him. Only a muffled splash left testimony of his departure. Sabre gritted her teeth and ran to Jack's side. Damn them!

Sabre had finally found a home, someone to be with, someone who loved her and didn't treat her like a slave, and this had to happen! She looked at the wound in panic. It had gone right through him, and under the ribs, so it was not exactly deadly, but Jack had bled quite a bit. She gently put a hand on his forehead, to calm him down, but it seemed like he was unconscious. All Sabre could do for now was to stop the bleeding.

Leaping over the plank, Sabre grabbed her clothes and brought them on board before tossing them beside Jack. Grabbing the white dress, she bit the sleeve and pulled, ripping it into an spiral of sorts. Then, she tore Jack's shirt off him, and wrapped his abdomen in the improvised bandage. The assassin had most probably a completely clean blade, Sabre knew that, so the possibilities of infection were fairly low until she got him down to his cabin and cleaned his wound. Taking him in her arms with as much gentleness as she could muster, Sabre carried him down into the ship's innards, running down the corridors.

Jack slipped back into conciousness for a moment, and realized he was dead. He was weightless... floating through the.... ship? Something was wrong. He saw Sare's face. "Oh he got you too. That's a shame. At least I'll have my angel up here with me." He smiled and groaned. "Why do I still hurt? Oh I get it. Piracy. Hell... right." He slipped back out of conciousness. He heard his family calling him. No... not his family now. The voices of those he had wronged. He felt hands clawing at him. He screamed feebly, not sure if he was still connected to his body.

He awoke several hours later. Burning. He could smell the burning of his flesh. He looked around, but his eyes didn't appear to be working properly. "Whheeerreee..." He asked, the most words he could get out before his throat completely dried out. He lay wherever he was groaning in pain. Just wishing he knew whether he was alive or dead.

Cauterization was the only thing Sabre could come up with, even if it hurt her almost as much as it did him. Doing this to him was simply horrible, but at least the blood loss would stop... he probably wouldn't need suture, the wounds were small.

Sabre spent quite a few hours watching after him. The morning went by slowly, and now the sun was about ready to dip its feet into the water.

Looking down at Jack, Sabre had spent these hours thinking. Thinking about the attack, the assassin's last words before leaving, and of course about what she would do. Staying with Jack would only put him in more danger. He was not a rival against the kind of people that would come looking for her, he couldn't protect her. But she also didn't want to leave his side. She loved him so much...

"Whheeerreee..."

Sabre inmediately grabbed the nearest water bucket and poured some into a jug, before tipping it over Jack's mouth. At first it was just a few drops so he knew what was coming, then it was letting him take sips, and finally a whole draught. Sabre sighed in relief, seeing he still seemed alive and at the very least about to recover conscience...

His head swam back into conciousness, opening his eyes he nearly screamed at the pain that tore through his side. He saw Sabre standing over him, looking down concerned. "Oooooohhh..." he moaned, his hand feeling for his side. "You... survived... I'm glad." He smiled weakly and closed his eyes, breathing narrowly. "Bloody hell... please tell me you killed the bastard."

Sabre took his hand in both of hers, caressing it lightly with her fingers. She shook her head gently, looking down in shame. She should have killed that assassin when she had the chance, but Jack might not have survived long enough...

Sabre stared into Jack's eyes, even as her doubts swam behind her pupils, clouding her senses. She just didn't know what to do. She wanted to leave so Jack would be safe... but that might not help him anyway, and she didn't want to be alone again either. Leaving Jack's side was Sabre's least desired thing in this world, even above more torture.

Her wound still bled, so absorbed she was in taking care of Jack. By now, the pain coming from it had become numb.

"Ahhh well..... we'll get 'im later." He laughed weakly, coughing up a little blood as he did. "Who... who was it?" He asked, realizing the futileness of his question. Even if she did know she couldn't rightfully tell him. He sighed, regretting it immediately as another shot of pain went through his side. "Rum... I need rum for the pain." He saw the pain and hurt in her eyes. "Don't be doubting yerself love. Even if I lie here injured don't ye doubt yerself. I'd have been dead earlier if you weren't there with me."

Sabre stepped off the stool she was sitting on and grabbed the nearest bottle of rum, giving it over gently. She looked miserable, saddened, nothing but the truth. His words were not empty, but they certainly misguided.

If Sabre had not stepped on his ship, Jack wouldn't be wounded like this. Truth was, Sabre wanted to confess, to let him know it was all because of her fault. But she couldn't. She... couldn't... and this thought made bitter tears of resentment and self-hate swell in her eyes.

She didn't deserve to be with Jack.

Days went by. Jack had been concious enough to order them to set back out for sea, not wanting to remain in the city if there were more people out there looking for him or Sabre. He faded in and out as the ship's surgeon and Sabre attended to him. He would live, but it would take a while for him to regain his strength. "I guess my luck finally ran out." He said, chuckling during one of his brief concious spells. Finally after five days at sea Jack felt healed enough to make his way out of his cabin and onto deck. He looked out across the sky and saw the sun shining down on the waters and gave thanks that he was still alive.

He knew his men wouldn't try any sort of mutiny, not with Sabre still firmly behind him, but he was surprised to see how many of them were actually sympathetic to their captain's plight. "Must not be doing enough to strike the fear of God into them." He said jokingly. "I be a pirate captain; supposed to rule by fear, not respect." He laughed and it made him cough slightly as pain shot up his side.

By the their tenth day back at sea he was healthy enough to return to his duties as Captain. His side still hurt, but he could spend his time above deck and get around on his own fine now. It was only about four days till the military payroll they had sailed all this way for was supposed to come through and Jack wanted to make sure they hit it, whether he was injured or not. "It'll be a big enough haul to set us up fer the next five years." He explained. "It nae matters if I be hurt, it's the job we came to do and we're going to do it." He pronounced.

Nothing to see here, move along.
