I am curious, fellow lit authors. What percentage of your reader count actually rates your stories? You can find these figures under the Submissions->View section of your login page on the main site.

Different categories have different rates of voting and feedback, and even that can be skewed by posting day and numerous other factors.

Taking the whole of my stories in all three pen names as they stood some time back in May:

13,141 votes on 2,610,290 views for .50%

I've got a few here and there that are between 1.15%(Sci-Fi/Fantasy) to 1.19%(Incest/Taboo) vote/view ratio.

And that's views. We have no idea what a view actually is, with respect to actual readers. Every access of the story racks up a view, but does that count someone reading half of the story, closing the browser, and coming back later as 2? Does each page of the story count as a view?

I certainly don't believe that 2.6 million different people have read my scribblings.

Looking at (mostly) the same stories on another site, I've got a 2.67% vote to download ratio there, with a maximum ratio of 9.49%

And I clicked the wrong option in the poll *laugh*

Similar numbers to Darkniciad.

.5% to 1.5%

Some stories do much better than others, including many of the top-list stories.

Contest entries for me do well at the beginning, getting as much as 2-3% or more, but that goes down over time.

100,000 view for a story usually equates to the 700-1000 ratings.

The stories with really high views (300K+) don't do as well. under .5% mostly.

Similar percentages, yah. Everything else? *laugh*

I've got less than a handful over 80k views, and nothing has yet reached 100k. My maximum vote total is 560 something, with only one other breaching the 500 bar.

Percantage?

Oh, wait! You mean perCENTAGE! I get it! I'm not so stupid! Now, what was the question?

Love,

Jamie

PS: Who CARES? If it's HOTT, it's HOTT! If it's not, well, sorry...

PPS: Okay, 50 percant, I mean, perCENT!

PPPS: No, wait, maybe only 10 percant, the rest just jerk off and run!

I've got to admit that surprises me. I would expect your work as Les Lumens would get some high reads/votes. All those red "H"s should yield reads, I would think. Sci-Fi on the other hand is a hard category.

For me, the first story in a longer series gets a lot of reads/votes, with later stories getting less reads and even less votes as a percentage.

And I've been lucky enough to have some #1 stories for a while (at least 4) and that results in big numbers always. Usually 300K to 600K. Of course that results in more reads for all my other ones.

My rates are fairly low (.38%). I don't see a pattern. My highest return (.88%) was from a story with an average score and fairly low number of views whereas one of my lowest returns (.25%) was from a story that generated 85,000 views on its first day and the third highest rate (.72%) came from my lowest scoring and least viewed stories. I don't know what moves readers to vote or comment. As a reader for years on Lit prior to writing, I don't recall ever voting or commenting so I can't really complain (although I do whine about it in my bio).

The Hs don't really mean much. Many of them are on stories with unimpressive vote totals, many are in obscure categories, and most of the people who choose to bomb me are apparently so well known as malcontent voters that their 1-bombs rarely last more than 24 hours.

The H-ratio is pretty much the same on all three pen names. My third one has all the stories in mainstream categories, and only one oddball with a low vote total, but that name's dedicated to pure, quick-read smut, so those Hs don't really mean that much either.

I average about 50 votes per story/chapter as Dark, 123 as Les, and 197 in my third pen name ( at least as of May )

I can't manage to turn out new stuff often enough to develop that large, sustained fanbase that collects new readers like a snowball rolling downhill. Plus, I made the choice to divide my interests amongst three pen names. They all share some readers here and there, but they're primarily separate groups. So even when I do put out something new, it's only one pen name that benefits.

... Except on rare occasions, like now. I have a couple ready for all three pen names, plus more moving toward completion. There will be a flurry for a bit, depending upon how long I can sustain the motivation.

Mine works out to 0.35% overall.

But my most recent 2 stories (ok, the only 2 stories posted this year ) are 2.3% and 1.64%, compared to my oldest (7 years ago) are 0.24% and 0.29%. Age counts, and people can only vote once.

Ah, yes. But what if it's only hot because 99% of people start reading my story and decide it's so crappy that it's not worth following to the end where the ratings buttons are? The remaining 1% who do bother sticking with the story are obviously people who like it, and therefore will likely give it a 4 or 5. That leaves only a very small portion of obsessive compulsive people, who can't bring themselves to stop reading a story they've started, even if it sucks, giving the 1 and 2 ratings that eliminate the "hotness" factor.

You guys should try writing poetry, it will give you a sense of perspective.

The most votes I ever got was 26 on 15286 reads and second place was 17 votes on 3262 reads. Worst was 3 votes on 244 reads.

Average number of reads is about 1500

It is rare to get more than 10 votes for any poetry.

Mythtrav16, I am so glad you started this thread as I have been extremely curious how the numbers stack up or how they can be interpreted. Later tonight I will sit down and get a percentage to vote on your first post.

My best work by views is my first one, The Deal Chapter 1, which posted 5/1 and has currently 203,400 views and 834 votes (okay, so probably 50 are me being a dork and looking at the story that first week going "Wow! That's me! That's my story with that familiar background!" <click off> <click back> "Ohh cool! It's still there, awesome!" BUT I never vote on myself as that is just way too egoish)

My worst was a contest story "Once Upon" that is just under 9,000 views and 33 votes and my lowest score of 4.00.

Again, I can spin so many different ideas and rationales about these numbers but I have no reference points to go by, so I love this discussion. Bring it on.

You need a link in your signature, even if that doesn't work for me.

My most recently posted poem has no votes.

I used to have a lot of poetry posted, but deleted them all. Now I have two again, with the total reads combined only 1300.

I have 9 posted poems, four posted in July 2002, one in 2003, one in 2004, one in 2005, one in 2006 and the last one was posted last week.

None have 10 votes.

The collection of stories has a distribution, and you can sample it for statistics to help you determine where your story places. Because Mike & Carol Brady cull the submissions, the distribution wont be 'normal' but you can still get an idea for where you are in relation to the best stories. Of course, that information is sure to depress plenty of posters if their response rate is 1% and the best get 10%.

Including stories no longer up on LIT I’ve received approximately 115,000 votes on 15,100,000 views.

Which translates to about 0.76% (See list below for most of my stories still up on LIT)

darkboy made a very telling point – we don’t know exactly what a view is. And the QUEEN :cattail:, for whatever reason, has never been willing to clear the matter up. My own feeling is that VIEW numbers on the site are inflated 5 to 7 times.

SOME OBSERVATIONS:

My MATURE category stories have received relatively high percentages. The three I still have up are at 1.45, 1.87 and 0.84.

I have one LOVING WIVES story at 1.76 but others at 0.42, 0.72, 0.39 and 0.75. No pattern to them at all.

I have an INTERACIAL story that the authorities put into the INCEST category. I assumed readers would never vote for it but it’s got almost 1000 votes, has an H and a percentage of 1.28. You just never know!

My lowest rated story of all time at 3.83, was another the authorities put in the INCEST category – death for its rating given there was no incest whatsoever in it. Still, it’s amassed over 900 votes and a respectable 0.88 percentage.

My highest percentage receiver, at 3.22, is an EROTIC COUPLING story but that may be deceptive since it was a second chapter and chapter one was a INCEST category story. The second chapter had far fewer views but about the same number of votes.

My one remaining ROMANCE story is at 1.01.

The top vote getting story in LITEROTICA history, “Daddy”, I Whispered, is now at very respectable 1.31 but for the first year it was up was at 2.40. Over time, as our smart Texan pointed out, best sellers seem to slide downwards. I credit most of this to readers who come back to read the story for a second or third or fourth time.

My second top vote getter is only at 0.53 which seems very low but again it did start much higher (1.50) before tumbling.

One of my lowest stories percentage wise (0.25) is one of my most popular. It has almost 400,000 views and is less than 10 votes short of joining the 1000+ vote club. I had the son (it’s a mother/son story) unexpectedly kill his father late in the story and I believe this stopped many readers from voting. But they still come back for second reads.

In another Incest story I slipped in a gay scene right at the end – it killed the rating and the number of votes made.

VOTE PERCENTAGE versus RATING: There doesn’t appear to be any correlation between the rating my story gets and the vote percentage it receives. Some of my lowest rated stories got relatively higher percentages while others got some of the lowest ones. And my highest rated stories often have some of the lowest percentages.

Nor does the number of votes received correlate to the percentage.

Nor does a stories position on my story page correlate.

In the end it’s a crap shoot to guess what a new story might get in terms of VIEWS, VOTES or PERCENTAGE.

Not all that rare. I have just over 100 poems posted, and 19 of them have at least ten votes. The most is 62 votes on a poem that started as an illustrated one but the pictures were deleted because of Lit. policy. I have some that are over a year old and have no votes at all.

My stories probably average about .2% votes per view. That would translate to about two votes per 1,000 views. I like to think it is because people start reading stories and start masturbating shortly after and try to cum when the characters do. After that, they are through with the story, whether they have read to the end or not, so they close it without voting. :(

Contest entries do better, at least in terms of voting percentage, but too many of the votes are troll bombs.

I had never considered this number, but since the thread was started, I did some adding.
18 approved stories, 1 is "awaiting"
101,614 "views" .... I too wonder if ISP's are checked for doubles/triples/quadruples...etc.
298 Votes
Equals
.29 percent
4.04 average score
ugh.

So the stats on all twenty of my stories to date is

4,408 votes on 932,372 views which means .47%

adding the twenty scores together then dividing (which I am sure is not the accurate way to do this) I get an average score of 4.49

The more accurate method would be to multiply the average score for each story by the votes for that story, add all twenty products and divide that sum by the total number of votes. The difference between the two methods would be very minor, and not worth the trouble of doing those calculations,.
