CANBERRA, Sunday 19 January, 0830 hrs. Bushfires have raged through the suburbs of Canberra costing two lives and almost 400 houses lost.

The weather forecast for the declared disaster zone is more high temperatures and strong winds, making more fires likely. Below are several Australain news service links which will automatically update during the emergency.

Other bushfires rage in the Snowy Rivers National Park, see link below

BUSHFIRES IN KOSCIOSKO NP

Meanwhile in Northern Victoria, the Murray Valley fires continue around Biggera and Corryong. The snow resorts of Mount Buller etc have survived to this time, see link below.

VICTORIAN BUSHFIRES

Canberra is the national capital city, about 300,000 people mostly employed in government . . . the Oz equivalent to Washington DC.

The Kosciosko National Park is the centre of the Oz snow resort indusrty at Thredbo, Guthega and Jindabyne.

That's a shame. The benefit will be when trees are replanted. Growing trees produce 70% (on avg) more oxygen than mature trees. Nature knows what she is doing.

If they continue this terrible drought pattern, those trees may not get the chance to grow back for some time...

It's hard to see your home burn and wheat orders unfilled.

;)

Were the fires arson like thev Sydney fires or another result of climate change........global warming?

Last summer was the dryest in living memory on Vancouver Island which is, officiallt, rain forest. Glaciers are shrinking back at record rates and, therefore, threatening a water shortage. Snow fall was down over the last five years.

Well then Mother nature is punishing them for some of dingodick's mental state. maybe.

I have a friend who lives in Thredbo Village, which was evacuated yesterday.....she said a lot of the fires were caused by thunderstorms, lightning strikes but with no rain to extinguish them. I haven't heard whether any of them were arson....... :(

Yes. Mars warmed up too. Scientific, measured fact. Sun warmed up too. Scientific, measured fact. Just remember, the Sun is the culprit, not man. We are no longer at the center of the universe...

HighlyStink . . . there is no doubt about your decreased mental state . . . must be caused by all that petroleum pollution that occurs in the U$ . . . too much lead in the brain makes you a moron (seems to fit) . . . and it doesn't matter how much extra oxygen is created when U$ industry is busy spewing pllution and refuses to sign and implement the Kyoto Protocol to clean up the environmental mess created by capitalist U$ . . . the Oz bush will regenerate, it is designed that way . . . Mother Nature can handle biological disasters . . . she only has problems with man made disasters like the U$ policy of unlimited pollution by the U$ government bowing to the U$ corporate sector unwilling to upgrade their manufacturing plant to the standards required in the twenty-first century . . . another reason why the U$ economy is in decline . . .

Wake up, this thread was started for any aussies overseas and thier friends, not for ratbag revellry, save that for my other threads where it is appropriate. :)

Basically, the sun and it's magnetic fields go through cycles of about 11 years. We just went through a peak in the cycle, the most intense (hence hottest) recorded. This caused melting of ice caps on Mars which could be observed with a decent telescope.

We really went at it during the time of Kyoto...

Yes, we here in the land of drought wish you the very best.

Sympatico...

If you would bother reading my first post, cock gobbler, you'd see I posted a possible benefit after the fires.

But that's typical of you to see and read what you want.

The Inter-Glacial period is ending. Nothing major in geological time-flame.

FIRES

We have some bad ones in the USA also and I have seen the results of the ones their in Australia. I think we fuck with mother nature to much sometimes. I don't want people harmed or property lost but maybe we should think of this before we start something. The world was here long before we were and will , hopefully, long after we are gone and did not need mans help to mess things up.Sorry just my thoughts.
