Raised beds are a hell of lot easier to work even if they do get weeds, Raised beds usually means you fill it with quality soil, compost, manure etc so there shouldn't be weeds. My parents live hear Randwick Racecourse with several stables not to far away & they have lots of used straw, manure so look around & if you get enough of it they might even deliver free just so they don't have to pay to get rid of it.

I was toying with the idea of raised beds this year - but have gone the easy route instead.
Black plastic has been laid in the vege patch, and I can almost hear the weeds dying and rotting down while my seedlings grow.
When they are big enough to plant out, I'll lift the plastic, turn the soil, and then lay the plastic back down and cut grow-holes for the veges.
Hopefully that will solve the weed problems :)

Good Morning

Hope that is a standing invitation. If so prepare yourself for some investigative journalism.

Probably up and moving getting the youngsters breakfast.

Picked up my clan last night, by the time we got home and talked about what they had been doing, managed to snatch 4 hours sleep and left them sleeping to come to work.
Didn't even get a t-Shirt, well not yet anyway.

Enjoy your day and the buzz of a busy house, I had learnt to appreciate the solitude but now it is over.

Umm while working as a gardener MAAAAAAANNNNNYY years ago we used shit loads of black plastic to avoid weeds in the general gardens but after naving it down for a few years we were told it's bad to use as it restricts the water getting into the garden where it's needed plus kills of the existing nutrients in the soil & working the soil with compost, straw, manure etc will keep the soil easy to weed & plants very happy although old manure is best as new stuff might burn the plants.

If weeds are still a worry check for dumped shade mesh as this still keeps the weeds & planting like you want to do with the plastic but saves the quality of existing soil.

My boys spent most of yesterday cutting more firewood. Now we have about 15 tonnes.
I'm lucky - I've managed to raise them so that they detest mess just as much as I do.
My house is completely organised, and their rooms are pretty well tidy too.
They keep them clean and tidy because if they don't, evil mum appears and strips everything out and leaves it in the hallway for them to sort out!

So OCD is contagious is it or is it that the boys know mum has it & try to keep her happy? just asking. ;)

BANDIT:heart: says I have it but I believes I have it too even though I only use the "A place for everything & everything in it's place" then it's so easy to find things your looking for. :D:D

DJ, I was forbidden to pick my daughter up on the motorbike so had to use dreaded public transport to go pick her up most times which for the 1/2 hour trip on the bike then took several hours. :(

Once she was with me lots of talking & catching up on what had been happening in her life since i last saw her & loved every hectic second of those years.

I got my daughter on weekends when i did get to see her & no where in her make up was the clean, tidy genes & it was always a battle everytime she had to clean up her mess & when she carried on about it she got extra duties to add to her joy but I loved every moment we had together in those years.

Funny thing now is she has 2 kids, a boy & a girl who have their mothers genes & my daughter was complaining about their messy rooms that she couldn't get them to clean, I just laughed at her & remined her about when she was younger. :D

My darling daughter definately does NOT have a neat gene n her makeup! I used to run around and clean up after her but don't anymore. Just close the bedroom door and ignore. She's getting better now SHE has to find whatever she wants. I have no sympathy when an 'important' whatever can't be found. Must insist that common areas are kept neat, though. 'Scary Mama' has her place!

Youngest cherub has now gone camping with friend and his family. :( Will be good for him. Camping with Mum just isn't the same. He is much neater than his sister.

I'm enjoying being the good-time parent, for a change. I was always the one who disciplined the cherubs. The hard work has paid off and they're well behaved but I didn't like being the 'bad cop'. It's sooooo much easier, now. :D:D

I hope your day wasn't stressful after short sleep. No T-shirt??:eek: Isn't that mandatory for a tourist????

My cherubs would need to be up at 4am for me to get them breakfast, and that will NEVER happen. That luxury is for days off or the rare later shift.

With youngest cherub off camping, the house is very quiet and chick flicks abound. And chocolate. And lotions and potions. And nailpolish. You get the girlie drift?? Humour me I'll only have one more year of this until she's off overseas.

I have evil thoughts of you sneaking into her room & taking a couple of her special things to hide just so she realises if it's tidy she will know where things are.

Morning Gil

Think a motorbike would probably have been a little inadequate last night, luggage filled the Falcon's boot with the duty free on their knees.

Haven't seen much of my daughter since her return, boy friend was a priority last night, hopefully will catch up with her on Sunday, unless she needs something before that.

She also suffers from the untidiness gene, but blames it on lack of cupboard and drawer space, she hasn't worked out that if you hang and fold clothes they will fit, no, her choice of storage is the floor. Once a fortnight she has a blitz and for a minimal amount of time it is tidy.
Son is the same but he doesn't blitz as often more like infrequently, but it is their space so nothing serious is ever said. Wouldn"t change either of them anyway.

I've found the best fertiliser to use is Seasol and Powerfeed. used alternate fortnightly. This feeds plants and also improves the soil. Also a good weed suppressant is sugarcane mulch. Cheap to buy. In convenient, plastic wrapped bales so no mess in the boot of the car. One bale goes a fair way. The trouble with manure of any sort is that you WILL get weeds. If you use manure or straw from stables this is especially the case as there will also be plenty of barley, oats etc.

Gee i never thought for an instant that I'd be posting gardening tips when i decided to venture onto Lit. lol oh well, nothing like the fun of rooting around...............in the garden.

Thanx for all the gardening info, but I have been doing this for a lot of years.
Plastic is not the best idea - but as it's only down for 4 to 5 months, it's not too harmfull either.
Plus my vege patch has been mulched and turned all winter, as well as being on a slope so watering is not a problem.

On a far more serious note - the power is out! :(
And it's the top 10 shootout at Bathurst today :(

Plus, dinner is twice-cooked pork belly - which is now doing the first cook on my camp stove

I have it on but only for background noise, the top 10 hasn't started yet WQ so hope the power comes back on in time for you!

V8s and Nascar send me to sleep - literally! I put it on and lower the volume to "white noise" level and off I drift.

However F1 is too high pitched and irritating for me to drop off to ;) :D

Thank god for my galaxy tab! I can watch it streamed from the web, so long as my battery holds up!
If not, I will be sitting in the car with the engine running to charge the tablet while I watch!

The main power grid for the entire area is out, so I can't even go to the pub to see it.

Oh yeaah. I remember dozy afternoons relaxing to those V8 notes and opening the eyelids to keep a check on how Dickie Johnson was doing .....

Haven't indulged that way in a while. i think it may be overdue.

Hey Mr grafton!

Good to see you made it to the thread. :D

There's a bit of everything goin' on here at different times!

I have evil thoughts of you sneaking into her room & taking a couple of her special things to hide just so she realises if it's tidy she will know where things are.

Hehe. Now THERE'S an idea..........

thanks triskele, mmm now that sounds promising lol i dont mind a bit of variety lol

My variety this evening is a little bottle of voddy after a very tiring day at work. Just a little splurge on a sweet premix. A loooong soak until my toes are prunes and lots of smelly girlie stuff in the bathwater. lol

aahhhh yeah - Bathurst - where the taxi's go around the hill :D - I'll be glad when the new bike track is done so the bikes can zoom the mountain again :cool:

Bathurst :D
It's going to be a good day, I can feel it!
Power is on, so all is good.

Maybe not such a great day for W.Q. seeing it's Holden 1st 2nd & 3rd!

Webbo, I went to several Easter Bike meetings at the mountain & told I had a good time there. I hope they do produce a safer track for the bikes but with the economy & MA don't think it will happen for a long time to come.

BANDIT:heart: got a text message from he family in Christchurch a while ago to let her know all are safe after a 5.5 shake earlier tonight.

The thing about Bathurst is, it's the one race where it doesn't matter to me who wins.
It's just such a great race on an awesome track.
I will admit, I'm not thrilled that Tander won - I don't particularly like Tander as a person.
The good news tho, is that one of my boys is still leading the championship... Lowndes and Whincup are my drivers of choice, even though they now drive Holdens (I follow the drivers, not the cars - an anomoly, I know!)

Good to hear bandit's family are all ok. Christchurch seems to be getting a fair few shakes.
Hopefully the earth will settle down a bit soon and it will stop!

We only get the reports from her family when it's a fairly large shake & the news media here haven't even mentioned it but every to bit celebrity gets air time. WTF

The coverage of Bathurst sucked big time for us it was more an ad marathon than a race.
