Morning all,
It's Reconciliation Week here in Aussie land and it's gone rather flat as there is no appetite for Indigenous rights in this country. The over 60% No Vote in the referendum last year shows there is little to no point in discussing Reconciliation with the indigenous people of this country by a majority of Australian society. It's makes for a news story which most people it seems just ignore anyway. There is a theme in western democracies these days that if you acknowledge another culture it means yours will suffer by not getting enough air time either on the news or more and more on social media. It's made these democracies dumber and less knowledgeable about the world outside their own social circles. We have become inwardly focused on what's in it for me and if I acknowledge the rights of others, I will miss out. This is why democracies are going to the far right because the far right is all about selfishness and imposing your will on others to protect what you think is your status in society. Which speaks a lot to why the Yes vote failed and says a lot about where Australian society is right now. The slogan "if you don't no, vote no" is one of the dumbest statements a progressive society can make yet it's a message over 60% of Australian society agreed with. You can't claim to an intelligent society if that is slogan you believe in. It's a negative argument and we can't have society defined by negative philosophies otherwise we cease to progress. Tourists who come to Australia are told this country is a fair society and racism doesn't exit, none of those statements are now true.
There is no point talking about closing the gap whilst there is fundamental racism against indigenous people who are the First Nations people of this land yet a majority of Australians sent the message last year that they reject indigenous culture. Australia is stuck in it's colonial past when it comes to indigenous people. They are thought of as nothing more than refugees in their own country. They only make up 3% of the population so don't have political power and rely on collaboration with parts of Australian society to get equality. Immigrants who come to Australia have more rights than the people who have been here for 65,000 yrs. It is the world's oldest continuous culture yet is largely ignored by the Australian public. Their culture is good for tourism ads but very few tourists actually know how indigenous people are treated and perceived by a majority of Australians. You won't see that on the glossy ads and brochures. When indigenous people speak out there is a reason they are so angry, yet most people seem to think they are just having a whinge. The ongoing coronial inquest into the death of an indigenous man at the hands of police has shown fundamental racism by Northern Territory police towards indigenous people in that part of Australia. The police commissioner of the NT said he was too busy to deal with racism in the police force he manages. Which sends a signal to the entire police force in the NT that no action will be taken to racist actions even if that lead to the death of an indigenous person. That type of racist culture in a police force is dangerous as we see in the US. Black people in this country are killed by police without any recriminations similar to the US. Indigenous people will not gain equality in Australian society unless this fundamental racism against them is removed from Australian culture which was started by the Anglo-Saxons who came here. I say that as someone with Anglo-Saxon heritage. What is ironic is that Anglo-Saxons are a product of invasion. Saxony is in Germany not the UK.
With the nice sunny days to start of this week I spent the first couple of days in the backyard doing more clearing of stuff towards the back fence. Put a big dent it that part of the work in the backyard. Used a lot of those cutting to fill up the area around the side of the house that suffers from that lower land due the building of duplex next door. It just takes time to build up the soil. Can't do that all in one hit unless you want to pay lots of money to bring in new soil, even then you need top that up as the ground settles especially after it rains. I already have stuff to fill that area which is free all it needs is a some grunt work from me. I also gets lots of cardio doing this. I keep getting surprised as to how different the backyard now looks as I remove stuff. I forgot how big my backyard actually is. Looked a lot different with those trees and massive rose creeper over the archway. All that is now gone mainly to show the new buyers how much land there actually is on my block. I'm under no illusions that when I sell up, the new owners will knock down the house which has been on this property since the 1950's. Another piece of history in this area will lost given my house was one of only two originally in the entire area. When they built houses in the previous century they were built to last and the workmanship was much better than we get in modern homes which is all about speed.
Just did my next medical stuff for the next specialist appointment happening next week. Will see what hoops I have to jump thru. Done so many blood tests I know the procedure better that some of nurses. Had times when I had to tell the younger ones what they have to do like making sure you sign the paperwork otherwise Medicare sends you a bill. Doesn't happen with other medical stuff just blood tests. Not sure why that is. Blood test are a standard procedure required by all GP's and specialists you see, so I don't get why it is treated differently.
Just been watching the wind pick up and the overcast conditions get heavier. Brought in the washing before it blew away. The high winds started late last night. Saw all that rain hitting Adelaide this morning whilst watching the news. Not sure why reporters insist on standing near the thing they are reporting on given most of the time it's just some random building linked to the actual news story. Saw this reporter hunkering under an umbrella for no reason just to do the news story on a random street near to where something happened. As an example if there is a news story on a medical issue, the reporter will stand in front some random hospital and talk a medical issue not even linked to the hospital they are in front of. As if we don't know what a hospital looks like. They treat us like we're all 5yrs old.
As a welcome to Winter here in Melbourne town the rain is set to be with us well into mid next week. So it will be a wet day timetable for the next week. Got stuff to do inside so not a major hit to plans, but would like to keep going in the garden.
Hope the weekend is good for you.
