Aussies! Check in here!

So I must say the Aussie womens cricket team is going to do better than the males team this season I think.

They are doing well even with Perrys bean balls. With how wet it was maybe a rule change is in order. Look forward to watching them more as the Matildas.

Halloween down under

i really am on the fence on this one and would be interested in Aussie opinions. Where do yo stand on Halloween in Australia? Another Americanism invading Australia culture or harmless fun to be enbraced? I see it growing, and see the fun, but it all seems so foreign, no pun intended. Maybe i am just over thinking it?
love to hear opinions.

I refuse point-blank to take part in any over-commercialised spending frenzy.
No valentines day, mothers day, fathers day, halloween, etc.
Even Xmas is generally a very subdued affair, with spending limits and emphasis on family time rather than the whole gift giving thing (my only concession is that I use it as an excuse to give once a year to worthy causes - sewing machines to poor women in Vietnam, wells for African villages, that sort of thing)

If these days were celebrated the way they should be..... ie. without the pressure to buy crap..... then maybe I would be slightly more enthused.

Since I became hyper aware of my household waste situation, I am now even less inclined to participate in rituals that end up with completely superfluous plastic waste!

Agree with Valentines and Halloween. For me the rest don't need presents (maybe xmas for the younger ones), except a great family day. Sharing food and wine or whatever around the table with family that are important.
That is what is important to family, sharing time and a meal and so much more.

This weekend my eldest son gets Married, the new inlaws have controlled everything (I feel a bit like Schultz "I know nothing"). All I will care about is if they are happy. I hope its a great day but heaven help them if they make it about them and not the couple. I will be private, but will tell them.

Was so much more awesome than I expected, The Oils are every bit as good today as they were in the past. Was great taking the boys and seeing them rock out.

Welcome Summer enjoy your time here.

At least Garrett has another career to fall back on, then again I guess Tony could always sell onions.

Good to see the Oils back out there. Seems like you and your boys had a good time.

I'm starting to think it might be time for a revolution - force out all the current politicians and start fresh.

Yes but then where would middle aged white men gather and drink wine? Reckon we might have to wait a generation or bring on another meteor crash, worked for the last dinosaurs.

Yep now they should start demanding equal pay. The ladies have been showing the blokes the way for a few years now so they should be getting better recognition.

Not a fan of Halloween. Mainly being pushed by parents with small kids. Not part of our culture and not even American considering it was a pagan festival just very commercialised these days. Considering the US is soon going to be into Thanksgiving then Christmas. Retailers must love it.

So nope I don't think you're over thinking it, just not really our thing, now the Melbourne Cup well that is something we can all get behind.

Afternoon all,

Well as we know it's Melbourne Cup day on Tues so naturally a long weekend in Melbourne town unless you're in retail or hospitality or emergency services or work for the PT. The usual chaos will ensue around the Flemington racecourse which has already started today. Much easier to watch on TV.

Well stage two of the getting the nbn has happened. The more I learn about it, the less impressed I am. Turns out the nbn black box and the modem have to be on all the time so the user pays to power the system. Thought that happened from the external connection. Wonder how long it will take before someone complains about having to pay for the nbn thru their power bill. So much for the campaign about saving electricity by turning stuff off. You turn it off your phone dies. Good safety system for the elderly, perhaps a way to reduce the pension. If they can't call for help no need to fork out for a pension. Nobody seems to know who gets rid of the old phone connections in the house, apparently they haven't thought that far ahead yet.

Got the last of my specs on Friday then went to the chemist for some eye drops to deal with an eye irritation only to be told to go back to the optometrist to get the eye checked out which led to a series of tests. I know they were being thorough but really. Conclusion was dryness. I have to go back for another checkup next week. It feels like I work there. I'm getting to know the staff on a first name basis.

Can't wait for the house down the road to be completed. Fucking noisy tradies, then some decided to park in front of my place on bin day. Solution now is to put the bins on the street, I reckon they'll get the hint or I could just put a sign up...'Fuck Off"...but small steps first. After all they are only tradies, they need a word picture.

Did the long drive to attend my eldest brother's 70th birthday last weekend. Got him a bottle of single malt scotch. Was surprised how much the prices have jumped in the last few years. A very long day all up did over 400kms just to attend the lunch, if it wasn't family I wouldn't go. As usual got home about 12hrs after I left in the morning and only had two drinks all day.

Hope your weekend goes well and your horse wins on Tues or just have a few drinks our your choice...obviously bourbon and coke for WQ :D

So whats your pick for tomorrow, or anyone else for that matter. I love my horse racing, but only bet small. Just love the fact you need to do research to be able to find winnners consistently, and yeah there will always be losing days.

My pick is Marmelo, loved his run in the CC, and also in Europe before, but it's a MC and lots could win!

My Trifecta is:

1st - 3,5,7
2nd - 2,3,5,7
3rd - 1,2,3,5,6,7,10,20,22,23

$36 got me 50% of the win, normally I don't bet more than $5 a race but it's the MC!
We can still dream

I'm leaning towards Marmelo as well but now he's the favorite I'm wavering. You'd think Almandin would have to there abouts with 200 to go. Lloyd Williams knows how to pick them and how to get them right on the day.

My roughie, for the lovers of a racing fairytale Single Gaze.
Nice barrier and recent form but will need everything to go right to get the distance.

Alas my tips were ordinary as always, Malmelo was given a good run, maybe pointed to the front too early but didn't make the distance. Frankie Dettori should be forever barred from the Cup after once again riding a good horse, Almandin, three wide for the entire distance... and Single Gaze... well she's just not up to the 3200 at this stage.

On the bright side by the time I arrived at the TAB (I'm too old for online gambling.) it was to late to put a bet on so I remained "all square" for the day.

Hope you all had better luck.

Charlie

How old is too old?

How old is too old?

Might have used the wrong terminology, rather than too old I should have said I'm from a different generation. I've got friends in their late twenties and thirties that punt on football, racing, cricket, election results etc on their phones all the time.

I was only ever a very part-time punter on sports and generally only did it when I actually went to an event like a race meeting. I gamble too much every year on the weather at work so it's not a leisure pursuit for me.

So I have spent most of today doing little odd jobs....
Repotted all my pot plants with fresh soil, cleaned and sealed the drainholes in a large terracotta pot ready to paint a membrane inside tomorrow so I can turn it into a water feature, started repainting my coffee table with bright yellow (I will finish it tomorrow), and did a couple of loads of laundry inbetween.
All with Tony Joe White and Rodriguez crooning at me on the stereo and a glass or 3 of red.....
All in all, not a bad day :)

How's everyone else doing?

I used to do the research years ago when it was a bit of a tradition. Remember when my dad would go down to the local TAB once a year and put the bets on. I was pretty good at predicting a winner, even gave few away to others. Predicted the trifecta several times. These days I'm not much into it but still watch it on TV every year. Certainly was a cold old day at Flemington. Been there lots of times and there isn't any place to hide if you're in the paddock.

Hey WQ

Not that enterprising only on my second cup of coffee. Got up late morning then unpacked the new evap cooler and doing general paperwork and research into a new phone now that the nbn is connected. Turns out I didn't really need a new modem its just what the telco's tell you. Leaving the wine till I cook later today.

Afternoon all,

Well an expensive week is finally over and the nbn, phone connection thing is completed. Seems a far too long winded process. Now looking at getting a new phone system since I had to relocate the main phone to the study. Also learned some more about what happens if the power fails and what safeguards are needed. I'm sure the elderly will find this all rather confusing.

Spent several hours in the garden mid week when the weather finally calmed down. My back and legs were not happy by the end of that. Then spent several hours the next day doing stuff with the car, lots of waking as well. The legs were not happy again. Then off to the eye check up the next day to revisit and eye issue, more walking. Today just sitting around doing paperwork.

The house being built down the road is like a never ending story. That truck backing up beeping is fucking annoying at 0745. The number of trucks and vehicles in the road is like living near a bus station. Seen a number of removals vans this week due to the long weekend here in Melbourne. The area is just getting more noisy as new and transient people move in. So many cars parked on the street even though every house has a reasonable driveway. People are just too lazy to drive a car into a driveway. The rubbish and recycling trucks have to deal with this every week. It must be annoying for them.

Putting the bins on the street rather than on the nature strip seems to be working. I think people are getting the hint.

Certainly is going to warm up here in Melbourne town this weekend and early next week. Had to move the long sleeve shirts to the back of closet. Might have to break out the shorts soon. You can't miss the fact that Christmas is on the way. Got in early with some chocs.

Hope your weekend goes well.
