i see not many people are a big fan of the whole audio-story genre . . . i've seen most are read by women who attempt to sound deeply erotic.

i'm finishing off a story that would be ideal for audio treatment because i've written a song for it and i'm using 2 other songs that friends of mine have written and for my song i've had someone write the music for it but i've not had the chance to hear it yet. and what makes it doubly ideal is that all the major characters are based on people i know and, with the exception of one person, can gather together.

so how do people here feel about audio stories?

Sanch, I have no interest in audio stories unless read by Alan Rickman. Seriously, I have no interest in Lit. audio stories.

Sancho,

I'd have to agree with Perdita. I've very little interest in the stories that are posted here now. As you said, it's some woman who talks as sexy as she can, ( I think they try a little TO HARD if you want my opinion.)

I think an audio story, done right, could be very good. I think you've got the right idea. Don't do it as a story.. Do it as an "Old fashioned radio show." Get different people to play the parts. Put in some music if possible. Maybe even a sound effect or two. THIS, I think would get people interested. I know I would LOVE to try it but I don't have a story or the computer knowledge or software to do such a thing. I think it would be great.

Doff's suggestions are good but for god's and our sakes be sure everyone enunciates and doesn't try to act unless they really are competent actors.

Perdita

well thats decided me then. the people i want for the story know that i love to overact, they know because they have heard me bitch about people reading poetry with a dull monotonous voice. just don't expect good acting - expect overacting with 3 songs and music and sound effects - it'll be a ripping good tale

be not afeard it will indeed be a cracking good yarn. a feast for the ears

Always only afear'd of being bored, but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt based on your posts.

Let us know when it's up.

Perdita

Agreeing with the majority of posters here. Audio stories will have to be read by a goddamn great actor if I'm to listen. A good author does not a good vocal actor do. ANd that is what an audio story require.

In fact, the only book where the author read his own work that I've found enjoyable was the audio version of Diouglas Adams' Last Chance To See. But that was, if I'm not mistaken, actually made for radio originally.

For poetry I believe it can work, if one had some reciting talent, but for anything read over five minutes, I'd stay the hell away.

I tried it in swedish, for a children's bedtime story CD some years back, when I was a young aspiring actor (who never got a break, and turned to a dayjob and writing instead) It worked OK, but I only read 3 minute snippets. Kids are easy to entertain. Just sound cute. and tell fluffy tales about fluffy animals. Not quite what you write, sancho. Right? :)

i write tales about fluffy animals - in my story i have a character who is half-man half-dog. maybe thats not what you meant. anyway it should be up in a few weeks - got to gather everyone together and play the music and sing and be drunk doing it.

Hmm... I write music, but I do have a recording setup. Any one wanna send me something... so I can play around with it?

Go for it, Sancho!

People with talent, and some versatile software, could create an interesting alternative to straight text.

Without those prerequisites, it could turn out uglier than a homemade clock.

I've been working on perfecting my porno grooves...

Trying to get in on the Cream 2004 party so I can perform there... I hope I get in. for those who don't know, Cream is a clothing-optional rave-massive in Montreal, so you forsee some slinking house, goa and pg going on...

i'll have to give my colloborators credit somewhere. i only wrote 1 of the 3 songs featured in the story and none of the music. ah well it will be good though - we got a drinking song and a love song and a lynching song (you have to consider the context to take it with good humour). i wrote the drinking song, its very manly, in that its sexist
