XP Flaw Puts MP3, Windows Media Files at Risk
By Dennis Fisher

Thanks to a newly found flaw in Windows XP, two of the most popular audio file formats can be used by crackers to take control of remote PCs. Users only need to hover their mouse pointers over the icons for malicious MP3 or Windows Media files to execute the attacker's code, Microsoft Corp. said in a bulletin published Wednesday.

The article contains a link to microsoft's site for the fix for this flaw.

Newly found flaw. That's funny.

Why don't they just admit that they really don't test the stuff anymore? That's user and hacker work...

We're already busy at work on Windows '04BMF!

Thanks for the link WH. I swear it's almost a full time job keeping up with all the updates and patches. I was almost done, then took a few days off. Next thing I know, all hell had broken loose. LOL

My wife runs XP on her computer, however she pays the bills on mine which runs 98Se.

She knows i'm so paranoid that i'm almost always well ahead of the general population when it comes to security.

It's just a good idea in general for people to check Windows update peroidically. There's always some patch or another to keep up with.

Hey WH, while you're here, I have a question :D

I have some avi files that used to play fine on Win98, but now I moved them to a new hard drive with Win2000, and they won't play the video portion, but I can hear the sound.

MS said I was missing a codec, but I can't seem to fix it. Have any ideas?

Try downloading the DivX 5.0 codec. It seems to support most video formats and the problem you're experiencing is typical of what DivX videos do with older.AVI support.

There is a Divx Player that downloads with the codec, but you can choose to install only the codec and not use the player -- it is a pretty nice player that will handl almost anythng, but it's just an added program you don't really need.
