Is there a way of finding out who has a certain number? I looked up the UK Phone Book online, but they can only give you the number if you've got the name. I've got a Brittish phone number on my caller ID, but I have no idea who's called me.

Help? Suggestions? Advice?

The first few digits give the area code.

That might reduce the possibilities to a specific town, if the call wasn't from a mobile.

20737...and a few more digits, not given out in order not to reveal this person.

Don't post the number here, obviously!

the first four numbers denote the City, ie
0131 for Edinburgh
0141 for Glasgow

Sometimes it's a five digit number for lesser towns or populations:
01983 for The Isle of Wight

The next three numbers specify the area within a city:

So 0131 453 **** means a number in Edinburgh, Juniper Green.
0131 449 **** a number from Edinburgh, Balerno and Currie.

The last four digits are specific to the person who called you.
There is no way of finding this out from the phone book, really, unless you know who called you!
Many numbers are unlisted, for privacy.

The second set of digits can also be from a private company like Telewest.
So 0131 572 **** denotes a number from Colinton, Juniper Green, Currie, Balerno, and a few other suburbs.

It's easy when your used to it.

And a BT number.

That once was 01-737-xxxx

and the 737 had a geographical meaning on a phone with an alpha dial e.g. 777 was SPR = Spring Park = West Wickham, Kent.

7 = P or R or S
3 = G or H or I
7 = P or R or S

I don't think you can do it on line and it would probably cost you, but a few years ago they released the whole directory on CD rom. It was searchable by name, address or number. I have no idea if they have an up to date one.

There is, and it costs a small fortune.

Must go. Much fun. :)

Central London numbers are divided up this way:

(0)20 7123 4567 (this is not a real number, just for demonstration.)

The first digits (you won't get the zero, that's left out for international calls, and only used within UK.) show its London.

The next four digits indicate the area of London.

The last four digits are the actual residence/business number.

Do you know anyone in or near London who could call the number for you (it's cheaper), and ask them who they are???
