The Atkins diet has sparked a lot of controversity in many circles... and some think that some of the hype is for profit.... what do you think???

I, for one, am very pleased with the results. ;)

As long as one remains in tune with their nutrutional needs, Atkins could work.

Of course, I don't know a lot about it except that it is a no carb diet, right?

I did it before I got pregnant with my first child. I lost 20 pounds pretty quickly and easily. But then the decision was made that we wanted to get pregnant so I went off of it for nutritional concerns. I did eventually gain the weight back.

Incidentally, I occaisionaly felt some tenderness where I think my kidneys are. I don't think any harm was done, but still it was a little unsettling.

South beach has a lot of similarities, but my Dr. says it's a lot safer due to the lack of saturated fats. It's easy to follow too, because there is no portion measuring, just "do eat this, don't eat that" - and at the end of the diet, you end up on a regular, well balanced menu. I've lost 45 pounds so far, and I feel great. I'm never hungry, and I have so much more energy without the extra ton-age. Not to mention it made my dick look bigger! :D

Very similar to atkins in the first two weeks (phase 1), strict on carbs and sugars. Then you add in the good carbs, those not made from "whites" - processed grains, bad - rice, bad - a few other things. biggest drop of weight there, and it all comes off the belly. I'm wearing jeans I dug out of the bottom of the drawer, and I have to use a belt. (which now has a long tail since I have to sinch it up so much)

After that you are in phase two, you introduce whole wheat grains, whole grain pastas and other things like some sweets and additional foods.

In phase 3, you've gotten to the weight you want to be, and you just maintain it. by now, you've modified what you eat enough, that you can eat normally and not put the weight back on.

The best part is the book. It outlines everything for you, even down to giving you your entire menu for the first two weeks, and gives you recipies (delicious I might add) that are compliant with the diet. He even tells you how to eat in a restraunt on each phase. I've never had a hard time finding things on a menu that fit the diet.

My favorite part of the book is the beginning, where he explains how your body processes food. There's a section on why what you are eating makes you even hungrier in two hours. As I read it, I thought he had been following me around, watching me eat.

here's a shot of the before - around July

 wow i finally get to see the famous Francisco :) coolness. about the atkins diet-i went on it and lost lots of weight. i find it odd the amount of bashing that diet gets-i felt great on it. the first three days you can feel yucky as your body adjusts to getting its fuel from protein instead of carbs-but after that, you feel fabulous. tons of energy. and yes it does seem to melt away the pounds. personally im all for it, but my advice is to buy the book, that way you really understand why the diet works, and exactly how to follow it and what you should and shouldnt eat. some ppl just think "oh ill do atkins and cut out all myc arbs" but its not that simple. for one thing its not a NO carb diet as its detractors call it, its a LOW carb diet.

good luck :)

ps-any chance of seeing a pic of catalina? http://www.rapierrose.org/sml_yahooflirt.gif

Awesome!! I'm so glad I checked in on this thread - I got to see the pictures of Catalina and Francisco!

I'm not big on Atkins myself, but that's because I've been a vegetarian for more than 10 years. Vegetarian Atkins means eggs and tofu. More eggs. More tofu. Still more eggs and tofu. No, thanks!

I also don't think the current low-carb supercraze is going to last long. Many people don't understand the way Atkins or South Beach really work - putting yourself into ketosis, the initial phases, etc - they think that cutting carbs is going to make them lose weight, which isn't true. Atkins is great for some people, but it doesn't work for everyone, and a lot of people are going to find that out the hard way and be disappointed.

Found this interesting site which gave some recipes and info on the Atkins diet and products. Looks promising so hopefully will find time to explore it more in the next few days.

Thank you, catalina.

We will definitely have a look.

Hi it me again,

I have to be my negative self about the Atkins diet. Although very effective in the short term. (In fact I would have used it before my wedding except I knew I would cheat.) It can be very dangerous if a person has some underlying diseases and it's not effective for long term weight loss.

What happens in the body during the diet is the body runs out of glucose. The Brain an a few other essential organs can only burn glucose. so then the body start to convert other compounds into sugar. The intermediates that are converted into glucose come mosty from the pathway used to burn fat, therfore the body is less able to burn fat. It gets even better. Since the body is thinks it is starving it starts breaking down fat to smaller pieces. The little pieces build up because the fat pathway doesn;t have enough intermediates so they are converted instead to ketones and lost in the urine. Proteins are also burned for energy but the fat plays a larger role.

It sounds great right, you basically piss of the weight. The problem, with the diet and the reason it gets so much negative publicity is 1. ketones are toxic, 2. the Nitrogen from the protiens can build up, 3. all of the saturated fats and cholesterol will still clog up the arteries, 4. as soon as you eat normal most people body will gain weight back in preparation for the next starvation period.

I wish there was something easy. I am about 15 lbs heavier than I want to be. and I don't want to exercise because I HATE to sweat.

PS
I've also got this thing with big men:heart: , so please don't lose too much weight

I started atkins 3.5 years ago and now do a modified version of it, working in "good" vs. "bad" carbs because I exercise 4-5 times a week. I used to be 207 and now I am down to 145. I want to get down to 133. Master is happy :) Here is my after pic. The key is watching calories, watching what you eat and exercising at least 30 min 3 times a week. Without exercise, you won't get rid of it. :)

How true that is. I had a massive weight gain due to Depo Provera whiich nothing would move for about 4 years. Once I noticed a change happening, I really focused and got back into the exercise I had previously enjoyed and was up to walking at least 3 kilometres most days in the Australian heat, and doing light weights.....LOL, worked wonders!!

Since coming here though, I have not gotten back into the routine (stupid as it is cooler, and flat land), so I am working back into it. Most of the difficulty is now since I hurt my back last year, it is not always that great to exercise in the ways I am accustomed to, so I am looking at exercise which may strengthen the surrounding muscles to the injury, which in turn hopefully will lessen the limitations and I will be back to normal. LOL, he has made it clear though he will not tolerate me losing too much weight as he likes his woman curvy, soft, and voluptuous.

Depo didn't cause any weight gain for me, oddly enough. What did it for me was having to be on steroids for about a month (it was part of my treatment for severe chronic allergies). It changed my metabolism...I never used to gain weight before! (Oh, those were the good days....)

Wonderful those things. I know my daughter was a tiny girl always getting told she needed to eat more until she was also given steroid treatment for allergies at about 6 yo and within a month she had ballooned and has had massive problems the rest of her life. It does change the metabolism and the whole body type in people like her it seems.

That's my story exactly! In fact when I was in middle school some of my teachers thought I was anorexic. Even in college I could eat anything. Then when I was 20 I went on those steroids for my chronic urticaria, and I've been struggling with my weight since (even though I was only ever on them for one month).

Yep, she was also only on it for a month or so. It was a nasal spray which they didn't tell us was steroid based, and it took visits to 3 doctors to get one to admit it was a possible side effect of the treatment..the others denied it outright. It makes you so mad.
