I'm considering getting one for it's portability. For those of you who don't know, it's basically a micro-laptop. Small flash harddrive (read:no moving parts, smaller power drain). Goes from about $300 (US) to $500 for one with more features.

Seems like it would be great for being out and about like when the girls are at ballet, out at lunch etc. The people who have them love them. It's never going to replace my main computer, it's just not powerful enough for that. But for internet, writing on the go? Seems good to me. Anyone have any experience with them?

Its spec is about the same as my mobile phone (which has a Querty keyboard) and so is its price. But yes, for sudden writerly inspiration it would certainly do the trick. A few years ago I used an iPaq PDA with a fold-out keyboard for quick smut-writing breaks at lunchbreak.

The powers that be are targeting fat ducklings for spending too much time with their Wii's and PlayStations and you post this?

Leave the \www behind and go watch your girls at ballet, take them to lunch, and just reconnect with the non-cyber world.

We retro-twenty-somethings just love turning the machines off and enjoying some twentieth century one-on-one stuff . I leave my BlackBerry at work sometimes.

Being off-line has advantages - take a notebook. That's what Hemingway did.

I thought of the smartphone but dismissed it becaue the keyboard is just too damn small. Then there is also the matter of the extra $40 a month for internet on the phone. I used to use my Palm Pilot with an external keyboard but it's just not that convienent. Too clunky. This seemed more user friendly.

How did you know I was fat? :D (And I have and Xbox 360, no a Wii. )

First off, I can't watch them doing ballet, no parents allowed except the last class of the month. So I end up sitting in the parking lot for an hour. And I didn't mean using it when I was out with my daughters. I ment when I was out on lunchbreak from work, alone. (I only write smut in private.) Sitting in my car eating lunch staring at the steering wheel isn't all that thrilling. This seemed like basically a handy portable writing tablet.

I paid a lot of money just before quitting my last job for a little Sony Vaio TR1. (I knew I wouldn't be earning good money for a long while, so it was my "one last splurge"). It was a great investment -- four years later and I still love it.

Nice for portability, but I tried it out, and couldn't type on it to save my life. It's so small for my fingers, that it's no better than a Blackberry or similar device.

So for now, I use my qwerty phone when I get a sudden urge to write stuff down.

I'd love something in this size, but with the low level performance and price of an eee.

ASUS Eee

No personal experience, but as an Open University student, I have access to OU Student Association forums (fora?) one of which is for Linux, which is the Eee's OS. There has been lot written there about the Eee, virtually without exception positive. As someone pointed out, the keyboard is small, so try before you buy.

Alex (making one of his increasingly rare visits to these parts!)

The only worry is that you will buy one the day before the 10" screen model comes out. :D

I miss bulky blackberries and their thumb-boards. I could write wicked fast cradling one in my fingers and typing with both thumbs. The keyboards of Treos and their ilk are very offputting.
