Assimilation

There has always been 'bigotry' and 'prejudice;' it's human nature to have an us against them mentality and when the long-established see new, illegal, arrivals getting preferential treatment, then there is naturally going to be resentment and when that resentment is not placated, then it festers into anger and hatred as government takes and redistributes wealth to welcome in the invaders.

Our legal minority citizens dreaming of attaining middle-class status are thus squeezed out of the job market and robbed of opportunity by a group of people who only want the opportunity to take wealth and send it home looking towards the day when they can return home and retire only to send their sons and daughters over the open border to take their places...

A barrio of the illegals soon turns the homes of the struggling legals into barrio residents too, even though they are the ones who have assimilated. They want homes and family here and that takes decent wages, but the economic reality of importing cheap labor (hell we don't even have to import it, just advertise sanctuary and benefits and they will come) prevents their upward mobility which is why so many legal Hispanics are increasingly in favor of physical barriers and limiting the influx of of economic thieves.

Yes, there were two posters here recently, who identified themselves as Hispanics.

They both said that most people from the Hispanic community respect Catholic Religion, even if they no longer practice it (note that many White posters here bash Christianity because they see it as a symbol of White oppression), and both were for the Wall.

And I've seen other Hispanics (two Dreamers included) saying similar things on TV

Should be noted, Ole Tom Bow Kaw had to backtrack and utter 100 mea culpas:rolleyes:

Self preservation will override any sense of Social Justice once your back is to the wall...

Was he referring to first generation (Hispanics, in this case) who come in a country via skilled jobs,
or illegals/ refugees?

Two separate groups of people - as in class, level of education, motivation to learn (a second language), even IQ.

Someone wrote this, read through it, thought "yeah all right" and hit Submit.

For reals.

This is what I meant: Legal immigrants tend to be selected based on skills.
Illegal immigrants and refugees – based on the "fist arrived, first accepted" criteria.

There are undoubtly many intelligent or educated people among illegals. But speaking in terms of nombers, one is likely to encounter a larger nomber of bright and educated people among Legal Syrian or Hispanic immigrants, than among the rest.

I don’t feel comfortable when I hear politicians lumping together Illegal South Americans with Legal South Americans. I think that it’s very insulting to the latter.

It all depends on what you consider "many." Overall they are uneducated, unskilled, and unhealthy. The truly skilled generally have no problem getting in by legal means.

Overall the immigrants are not assimilating as they were prior to the 'information age.' Cheap and instant communication enables them to maintain contact with native nation thereby diminishing the impetus to assimilate. This is an issue for all nations with significant immigration.

The illegals form their own isolated communities where ever they settle. Communities that are rife with crime because they are subject to arrest at any moment. There are some that believe that they should be allowed to stay unmolested by the legal system under the notion that if allowed to do so they would be more likely to trust and contact the authorities about criminal activity. That particular philosophy hasn't worked so far. They prefer to stay hidden in the shadows.

The other school holds to the notion that if they weren't here that particular problem wouldn't exist. A notion that's hard to argue against.

I think brokaw said things that a sizable percentage of americans over 45 years old think.

Once the boomers cease having economic value, the shift will be complete.

There is a significant difference between assimilation and celebrating the customs and traditions of the country of your ancestors.

The US is littered with societies that practise dressing up for significant occasions, dancing to the old country's music etc. St David's Day is not a lack of assimilation but Americans showing pride in their Irish roots before going back to living and working as Americans. There are more Irish Americans in the US than Irish in Ireland.

The cultural traditions that are not compatible with living as a US citizen tend to die out with subsequent generations or if not - that is lack of assimilation.

In the UK we have had real conflict between the cultures of rural communities in the Indian sub-continent and UK born generations less likely to accept patriarchal authority without question. Immigrants from cities are more likely to assimilate than barely literate farm labourers - because their education and upbringing makes them already aware of the differences that could cause problems and had encountered them before coming to the UK.

The obvious disconnect is the status and education of women. A woman who cannot speak English and is forbidden by her male relations from seeking education is unlikely to assimilate although her daughters who are educated in English schools are likely to, leading to conflict.

What language the family speaks at home is irrelevant. What is more important is the family's interaction with other people of differing cultural histories.

My wife's grandparents came over from Italy as very young adults. I never met them, but boy did they love the U.S.
Grandpa would even stand when they played the national anthem before games on TV, my wife tells me.

"Which old country?"
"Any old country!"

I know where you are getting at and you are not very slick with that patronizing comment. Criticizing the government and policies of a nation, doesn't mean one doesn't love his or her country. Does a teacher not correct a pupil when he is doing wrong? Does a good parent not correct the behavior of a child?

So how about you Deplorables put a sock to it with that fake jingoistic bullshit, ok? You clowns don't have the ownership of what it means to be patriotic.

Why do i keep having this strange feeling that you don't quite like Jews?
Or White people.
:D

I don't really care for most people. I am only pointing out that when someone says, "X is the problem" or "X does this", there's always another person or group who does the exact same thing yet they have no problem with them doing the same thing.

For example, the con artist whines about people from South America coming here to seek asylum because they're bad people and are criminals. Yet, he, and Republicans, remain absolutely silent about all the Cubans who come here seeking asylum. In fact, Republicans cowtow to the Cuban vote in Florida.

Ever hear of Little Havana? Wonder if the same people who agree with Brokaw would say the same thing about that place? How about Little Italy in large cities? Chinatown? Japantown?

Nope, not a word about those people. It's only the Mexicans, the same illegals the con artist has been hiring at his failing golf courses.

Here's a thing. The con artist made a big deal of calling out the illegal who killed a cop, using that as justification for his racism. Yet, he has said not word one about all the U.S. citizens killing police even though it's about a 10-1 ratio. Why is that? Don't you think he should more concerned about the 10 citizens killing police than 1 illegal?

Wow.

It's the first thing I've heard about it from anywhere, which is intriguing because it puts things into a certain context.

In Tom's world, there are no illegal immigrants, they are merely undocumented citizens who came here for economic opportunity and everyone just loves how cheaply they can employ them. It doesn't matter if it cuts into the earning power of legal American minority communities, in fact it helps...

For Tom's team, the additional bonus is that they are, like the black community, counting on the illegal immigrant's votes in perpetuity and taking them for granted. If the Democrats aren't giving them anything, that's okay, because Republicans want to take everything away from them; put them back on the plantation in the big house and on the hacienda in their shanty huts.

How can you possibly type this with a straight face, knowing, and ignoring, the fact that Trump employs illegals? You went on a two-paragraph speel without even mentioning that fact. It's obvious that you're part of that 39% who will never leave Trump no matter how much he goes against your own morals.

But hey, Hillary's emails and Dems importing voters

Cuba Refugees
The United States does not have much of a diplomatic relationship with Cuba. In fact, the United States has had a trade embargo with Cuba for the last fifty years. Because of this relationship, the United States is extra willing to accept Cuban citizens who are politically opposed to the Cuban government. Cuban citizens can apply for asylum, like any other country, but most Cubans who are able to make it to the United States do not have to.

Cuban Refugee Adjustment Act
The Cuban Refugee Adjustment Act, as the name suggests, helps make it easier for Cuban citizens to escape Cuba and get permanent residence in the United States. Any Cuban citizen who has been inspected, admitted or paroled into the United States can apply for a Green Card after living in the United States for one year. The spouse and young children of Cuban citizens can use this law to get a Green Card, even if they are not Cuban citizens themselves. Someone who was born in Cuba but becomes a citizen elsewhere can get a Green Card under this law.

Furthermore, a Cuban who has had a family based petition approved can be paroled into the United States while he or she is waiting for a Green Card. The United States government also runs a lottery that allows Cuban citizens to migrate to the U.S.

Asylum
If a Cuban citizen cannot manage to take advantage of the Cuban Refugee Adjustment Act, he or she can still apply for asylum. There are many human rights abuses in Cuba that would make people afraid to return to or remain in Cuba.
The U.S. State Department lists the principal human rights abuses in Cuba as “abridgement of the right of citizens to change their government; government threats, intimidation, mobs, harassment, and detentions to prevent citizens from assembling peacefully.”

According to reports, it was common for government officials to detain people for political reasons, and prisoners were often harassed and tortured. Free speech is only allowed to the extent that is supports the government and socialism; anyone who speaks out against either can be sent to jail. If people assemble to protest, the government typically organizes mobs to attach protestors. While the Cuban president’s daughter, Mariela Castro, has spoken out in favor of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, activists report that discrimination against LGBT people is common.

If you are Cuban and you are interested in obtaining permanent residence in the United States, New York Human Rights Committee may be able to help you. Call us at +1 (800) 560-1768 today. We are available 24/7.

No matter how often people say this, it simply isn't true — mostly people tend to overestimate the amount of assimilation that was going on in previous generations. In the late 19th century, Cincinnati had five German language newspapers. A fact like that goes against the commonly-held notion that back before America got all wimpy, immigrants used to get off the boat one day and were speaking like Garrison Keillor the next day.
