Was he referring to first generation (Hispanics, in this case) who come in a country via skilled jobs,
or illegals/ refugees?

Two separate groups of people - as in class, level of education,motivation to learn (a second language), even IQ.

In Tom's world, there are no illegal immigrants, they are merely undocumented citizens who came here for economic opportunity and everyone just loves how cheaply they can employ them. It doesn't matter if it cuts into the earning power of legal American minority communities, in fact it helps...

For Tom's team, the additional bonus is that they are, like the black community, counting on the illegal immigrant's votes in perpetuity and taking them for granted. If the Democrats aren't giving them anything, that's okay, because Republicans want to take everything away from them; put them back on the plantation in the big house and on the hacienda in their shanty huts.

I'm not disputing the moral side of things: the West's croney politics are largely responsible for the humanitarion crises leading to Syrian refugees or illegal South Americans.

But I also know from my friends& rellies that many Hispanics or Muslims who came there Legally hate to be conflated with illegals, reffugees or oppressed local minority groups, based on skin color.

They see themselves as having more in common with Legal immigrants of other ethnicities, European, African and Asians included.

Even after all this time, I struggle to come to terms with the identity politics from this forum. I suspect that your politicians are doing this stuff to gain votes, but people here fully embraced these ideas, they became like a way of life for some.

Yes, bigotry as in racism, homophobia, islamophobia are modern plagues.
But people outside of this forum are far more focused on class differences, if any.

How is it not more than a moral issue?

It's a policy issue, an economic issue, a health issue, and a security issue.

There has always been 'bigotry' and 'prejudice;' it's human nature to have an us against them mentality and when the long-established see new, illegal, arrivals getting preferential treatment, then there is naturally going to be resentment and when that resentment is not placated, then it festers into anger and hatred as government takes and redistributes wealth to welcome in the invaders.

Our legal minority citizens dreaming of attaining middle-class status are thus squeezed out of the job market and robbed of opportunity by a group of people who only want the opportunity to take wealth and send it home looking towards the day when they can return home and retire only to send their sons and daughters over the open border to take their places...

A barrio of the illegals soon turns the homes of the struggling legals into barrio residents too, even though they are the ones who have assimilated. They want homes and family here and that takes decent wages, but the economic reality of importing cheap labor (hell we don't even have to import it, just advertise sanctuary and benefits and they will come) prevents their upward mobility which is why so many legal Hispanics are increasingly in favor of physical barriers and limiting the influx of of economic thieves.
